Before half the Mediterranean had a white daybed with a DJ behind it, there was this rock. Purobeach opened here in June 2005 on a narrow promontory between Can Pastilla and Cala Estancia, and the formula it drew, white on white minimalism, a pool where the beach should be, music curated as carefully as the menu, has been copied along every coast from Marbella to Dubai. Twenty years on, the original still reads as a piece of design first and a venue second: a low white deck pushed out into the Bay of Palma with water on three sides and a 180 degree sweep of horizon doing the decorating.

As a piece of siting, this club is close to faultless. The promontory grants it what no beachfront lot can: water on three sides, no neighbours in frame, and an unobstructed west of sky for the evening performance. The palette holds the same discipline it launched with in 2005, whites and raw teak against dark lava stone, so at golden hour the deck itself seems to glow while the pool goes molten. The five Balinese beds cantilevered over the sea are the most photographed square metres in the Bay of Palma, and the picture is not a cheat. That part is exactly as advertised.

What the imagery withholds is context. Step back one frame and you are on a modest suburban headland ten minutes from the city, with the small package holiday cove of Cala Estancia on one side and the flight path of the island’s airport a few minutes away, which is why so many guests treat it as the glamorous last stop before a departure. The rock carries no sand at all, so swimmers choose between the pool and a ladder into open sea. And the operation’s scale cuts both ways: with room for up to 800 people at full event capacity, a packed August afternoon feels closer to a very stylish crowd scene than to the meditative emptiness of the brochure. Visitor feedback, strong on the whole, circles one recurring complaint, service that can wobble when the deck is full, worth knowing at this spend level.

The programming, though, is the part rivals never quite copy. Resident DJs run an actual arc through the day, downtempo in the morning, smooth lounge into the afternoon, nu disco and deep house as the sun drops, so the energy is composed rather than blasted. The kitchen’s M3 Cuisine idea, Miami, Marrakech and Melbourne on one menu, sounds like marketing until you notice how well a pan Pacific plate sits beside a North African one at a table facing the bay. Eat on the deck, or time the rooftop terrace for the hour the sky does its work.

There is no beach under the club, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. The compensation sits either side of the rock: Cala Estancia is a small, calm, family scaled cove immediately next door, and the long urban sweep of Playa de Palma starts at Can Pastilla just beyond it. A sensible day pairs them, sand and a proper swim in the morning, then the club from mid afternoon when its real product, the light show over the bay, comes on shift. For quieter coves west of the city, Illetas is the better base entirely.

The address is Carrer del Pagell 1, Cala Estancia, about 8 kilometres from central Palma and moments from the airport via Exit 7A, which makes a taxi the obvious play. Free parking exists in a nearby garage, a lot and on the street, but finding a space on a peak weekend takes patience. Sailors can bring the boat to roughly 39 32 N, 2 42 E and anchor off the promontory.
