Monterosso al Mare is the village that lets you actually have a beach day in the Cinque Terre. Where Vernazza, Riomaggiore, Manarola and Corniglia offer tiny rocky coves and swimming off the rocks, Monterosso has a long, genuine beach of sand and fine shingle along its Fegina side, with hired umbrellas, gentle entry and the space to settle a family for the day. For anyone travelling with children, that single difference makes it the obvious base of the five.
The town comes in two halves joined by a short tunnel. The older village has its harbour, narrow lanes and a smaller patch of beach, while the newer Fegina side holds the long sandy strand, the lidos and the train station right by the sand. Arriving by train and walking a flat few minutes to the beach is about as easy as the Cinque Terre gets, and it spares you the steep steps and the crowds that make the other villages hard work with a pushchair.
The honest caution is the crowds, not the beach. Because this is the only real sand on the most famous stretch of the Italian coast, it fills fast in summer. In July and August the free public sand is claimed early and the town swells with day trippers off the trains. Come in the morning, lean towards June or September if you can choose, and the same beach feels calm and easy. Pack water shoes for the shingly patches, and watch the depth, which shelves gently in the shallows but drops away as you go out.
For comfort and guaranteed shade, a lido umbrella is money well spent on a hot day, while the free sections reward an early arrival with a spot for nothing.
