The honest read

El Jablillo is the family secret of Costa Teguise, a small sheltered beach where a reef and breakwater turn the bay into a calm, clear lagoon. The water is shallow and gentle, the golden sand is compact and backed by the promenade, and the protected pool is one of the easiest and safest feeling swims on the east coast. Where windy Las Cucharas nearby suits the sails, El Jablillo suits paddling children and a quiet snorkel.

The honest read is that El Jablillo is small and can fill quickly, and it is firmly a resort beach with Costa Teguise right behind it rather than a wild or scenic one. But for what it does, calm sheltered swimming for families, it is excellent, the reef keeping the water gentle and clear when the open beaches are breezy. Arrive earlier on a busy day to claim a patch of the modest sand.

Costa Teguise gives El Jablillo an easy day around it. The promenade links the lagoon to the resort's cafes and restaurants, the Manrique designed Pueblo Marinero plaza is a short walk for dinner and a Friday craft market, and the bigger Las Cucharas beach is along the front for a change of scene. Up the hill, old Teguise and its famous Sunday market add the culture inland, an easy pairing with a gentle morning in the lagoon.

Pueblo Marinero

A short walk along the front, the Manrique designed Pueblo Marinero plaza gathers restaurants and bars, with a craft market on Fridays. It is a dining and strolling square rather than a beach club, and operators and prices vary and are to be confirmed.

Getting there and essentials

El Jablillo sits in Costa Teguise on the east coast, around 15 minutes by car north of Arrecife and roughly 20 from the airport, with regular buses from the capital and the other resorts. Parking is available around the resort, busier in the high season and on summer weekends when the small beach fills.

The lagoon, the promenade and the resort facilities are all close together, so a family day is easy to build. Pair a calm morning in the sheltered water with lunch along the front, an evening in the Manrique designed Pueblo Marinero, and a short drive up to old Teguise for its hilltop streets and the famous Sunday market.

Common questions

Is El Jablillo good for families and children?

Yes, it is one of the best family swims on the east coast, as a reef and breakwater shelter the bay into a calm shallow lagoon with a gentle entry. The protected water stays clear and gentle when the open beaches are breezy, which suits paddling children and a quiet snorkel. Lifeguard cover varies and conditions are typical rather than guaranteed, so keep children within reach.

Is El Jablillo good for snorkelling?

It is a gentle place to snorkel, as the sheltered reef bay keeps the water calm and clear, which suits beginners and children trying it for the first time. Do not expect a dramatic reef, but there is enough to enjoy in the shallows on a settled day. Conditions change with the weather, so check the water before heading out.

Is El Jablillo or Las Cucharas the better beach?

It depends on what you want. El Jablillo is small, sheltered and calm, the better choice for families and gentle swimming, while Las Cucharas nearby is bigger, breezier and the island's windsurf beach, better for watersports and space. They sit close together along the Costa Teguise front, so you can easily try both on the same day.

Does El Jablillo beach get busy?

It can, because it is small and popular with families for its calm water, so the modest sand fills quickly on summer weekends and in the high season. Arriving earlier in the day helps you claim a spot. Out of peak times it is much quieter, and the sheltered lagoon stays gentle and clear whatever the crowd.

When is the best time to visit El Jablillo?

The east coast is warm and bright across a long season from spring into autumn, and the sheltered lagoon stays calm and clear for much of the year. July and August are the warmest and busiest, when the small beach fills, while late spring and autumn bring warm settled days with more room. Winter stays mild but the sea turns brisk.
