Langkawi runs on a simple tropical rhythm, and once you understand it the timing becomes easy. The water is warm in every month, so the temperature of the sea is never the question. What changes through the year is the rain and, with it, the clarity of the water and the reliability of the sunset. The island has a dry season and a wet season, and choosing between them is really a choice between dependable sun at a higher price and a greener, cheaper, quieter island that comes with afternoon storms.
We have set out the year below as a season grid and then as notes on the months that earn their place, so you can match your priorities to the calendar. If you want the classic Langkawi beach holiday, with clear skies, calm water and a sunset every evening, look to the dry season from November to April, with February the standout. If you want lower prices, fewer people and do not mind keeping plans flexible around the weather, the wet months from May to October can still be lovely, especially in the mornings.
If you take one line from this page, take this one. For the best balance of clear skies, calm clear water and a reliable sunset, aim for February or the surrounding dry season months, accept that December and January are busier and pricier, and treat the wettest stretch in September and October as a gamble worth taking only for the quiet and the savings.

When each month earns its place
February. The finest beach month on the island, the driest and sunniest of the year, with calm clear water, dependable sunsets and warm but not oppressive days around 32C. The northern sands at Tanjung Rhu and Datai are at their most beautiful now, and the sea on the sheltered beaches is glassy. It is peak season, so book ahead and expect company on the Cenang strip, but for sheer reliability nothing beats it.
January. Bright, hot and dependable, the heart of the dry season and the festive peak, with clear skies and calm water. This is when northern visitors arrive in numbers, so the Cenang strip and the resorts are at their busiest and priciest, and the Chinese New Year period in particular fills the island. The trade for the crowds is some of the most reliable beach weather of the year and a sunset almost every evening.
April. The last of the easy sun before the wet season builds, hot and increasingly humid at around 33C with the warmest sea of the year. Early April is still firmly dry and a touch quieter and cheaper than the peak, which makes it a smart pick, while the final week or two can bring the first afternoon storms as the monsoon edges in. A good month to enjoy the north before the rains arrive.
October. The wettest month of the year and the one to approach with open eyes. The rain comes in heavy afternoon and evening storms, the water can cloud and pick up debris, and a regional haze sometimes lingers. The upside is real, with the lowest prices, the greenest landscape and the most space on the sand, and mornings are often fine, so it suits a flexible, budget minded traveller who plans beach time early and keeps the afternoons loose.

What is the best month for the beach in Langkawi?
February is the finest, the driest and sunniest month, with calm clear water and reliable sunsets, and January and March either side are nearly as good. The whole dry season from November to April is the window to aim for. The wet months from May to October bring afternoon storms, so they are cheaper and quieter but less dependable for sun.
When is the rainy season in Langkawi?
The wet season runs from roughly May to October, building to its peak in September and October, the wettest months of the year. The rain usually comes as heavy afternoon and evening thunderstorms rather than all day drizzle, so mornings are often bright. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed, so keep beach plans flexible in those months.
Is the sea warm in Langkawi?
Always. The Andaman Sea here is warm year round, sitting around 29C to 31C in every month, so the water temperature is never the deciding factor. What changes is clarity and calm, with the dry season giving the clearest, stillest water and the wet season clouding it after heavy rain.
When is Langkawi cheapest and least crowded?
The wet season from May to October is the cheapest and quietest, with the lowest room rates and the most space on the sand, in exchange for the storms. The peak and priciest weeks are December to February and the Malaysian and regional holidays, so for a balance of decent weather and fewer crowds, look to late April or November.
Does the haze affect Langkawi?
It can. In some years a regional haze from land clearing fires drifts across the area, most often between June and October, dulling the skies and the sunsets for spells. It varies a great deal year to year and cannot be predicted far ahead, so treat it as an occasional risk of the wet season rather than a fixed feature.
