Know this. This is the busy social hub of the island, not a quiet cove, so expect dive boats offshore, bars, music and a crowd, especially at sunset. For solitude and better snorkelling, head to the smaller bays.
Sairee Beach is the beating heart of Koh Tao, and whether that is a good or a bad thing depends entirely on what you came for. It is the longest beach on the island, close to two kilometres of soft white sand running down the west coast, and behind it sits an almost unbroken run of dive shops, bars, restaurants and resorts. Koh Tao is one of the cheapest and busiest places in the world to learn to dive, and Sairee is where most of that happens, so it is social, lively and never empty.
As a beach to actually swim from, it is the easy one. The water is usually calm and clear and slopes in gently, which makes it the most reliable swimming beach on the island most of the year, and there is a coral reef only a short way offshore for a casual snorkel. Be honest about that snorkel though, because the marine life here is thinner than at the smaller, quieter bays around the island, which are where you go if the underwater is the priority. The real hazard is boats, since dive and taxi boats work the water off the beach all day, so swim close in, keep an eye out and keep children in the shallows.
The other thing Sairee is famous for is the sunset. The beach faces due west, so on a clear evening the whole strip turns out for the show and the bars fill up, and it is genuinely one of the best sunset beaches in Thailand. That also tells you what Sairee is not, which is quiet. If you want calm and solitude, base yourself here for the diving and the ease, then take a longtail or a walk to one of the smaller bays for the peaceful, wilder version of Koh Tao. Come to Sairee for the sunsets, the dive scene and the easy swimming, and take it for what it is.
Beach bars and dive resorts
Sairee runs on beachfront bars, restaurants and dive resort loungers rather than formal daybed clubs.
The serviced side of Sairee is different from a resort island of formal beach clubs. What you get instead is a long run of beachfront bars, restaurants and dive resorts, many of which put loungers and umbrellas out on the sand and serve food and drinks all day, then turn into sunset and evening spots as the light goes. It is relaxed, cheap by beach club standards and geared around the diving and the nightlife rather than a booked daybed scene. On the west coast of Koh Tao
Sairee Beach runs along the west coast of Koh Tao, just north of the main pier at Mae Haad where the ferries arrive. From the pier it is a short taxi, songthaew or walk up to Sairee village, and once you are there the beach is reached on foot down any of the lanes between the shops and bars, since there is no road along the sand itself. Koh Tao is reached by ferry from Chumphon or Surat Thani on the mainland, or from Koh Samui and Koh Phangan.
Because Sairee is the main hub, everything is close and walkable, with dive shops, bars, restaurants and loungers all lining the back of the beach, so you can travel light. The trade for that convenience is the crowd and the boat traffic offshore, so swim close in and watch for boats. There is no lifeguard, the water is calmest in the morning, and the whole strip turns west for the sunset, which is the moment to be here.

The northeast monsoon around October to December brings the most rain and the roughest, murkier seas, so it is the least reliable time for the beach.
