Kefalonia runs on a clear seasonal rhythm, which makes the timing of a trip straightforward once you know it. The beach season is roughly May to October, when the tavernas are open, the sunbeds are out and the Ionian is warm enough to swim. Outside that, from November to April, the island turns green and quiet and much of the coast simply shuts, so the real question is not whether to come in summer but which corner of the warm season suits you.
That choice comes down to three things, and they pull against each other. The warmth of the sea peaks in late summer, the crowds and prices peak in the same weeks, and the cooler, quieter shoulders sit either side. This guide walks the season month by month, with a quick grid for the headline conditions and longer notes on the months that matter most, so you can match the week to the trip you want.
If you want the short answer, late May into June and the whole of September are the sweet spots, with a warm sea, dependable sun and a fraction of the August bodies on the famous cliff beaches. July and August deliver the hottest air and the warmest water but the worst of the parking scramble at Myrtos, while May and October trade a cooler sea for green hills and real peace. Below is the fuller picture.

| May | Warm, green | Around 19C | Low | Quiet | Season opens, swimmable at midday, very calm |

When each month earns its place
May. The season opening, and a quietly wonderful time to come if you do not need the warmest sea. The hills are still green from the winter rain, the wildflowers are out, the tavernas are reopening and the famous beaches are gloriously empty. The Ionian sits around nineteen degrees, bracing on entry but fine for a midday swim, and you get Myrtos and Petani almost to yourself. A walker and swimmer's month rather than a long lazy sunbathing one.
June. For many the high point of the year. The sea has warmed past twenty two degrees, the days are long, hot and reliably dry, and the big August crowds have not yet landed. Parking at the cliff beaches is still manageable and prices have not hit their peak. If you want full summer warmth with room to breathe on the sand, early to mid June is hard to beat.
July and August. Peak summer in every sense. The air is hot, the sea reaches its warmest of the year at twenty five to twenty seven degrees, and the island fills with European holidaymakers. The flip side is real: Myrtos becomes a mid morning parking scramble, the popular beaches are busy, and prices are at their highest. Book accommodation and the airport transfer well ahead, reach the famous beaches early or late, and lean on the quieter bays in the middle of the day.
September. The connoisseur's choice. The sea is still gloriously warm from the long summer, the fierce heat softens, and the crowds thin as the schools go back across Europe. Prices ease and the beaches breathe again, while the water stays around twenty five degrees well into the month. For the best balance of warm sea, gentle weather and space on the sand, September is the month we would pick first.
The shoulder edges. Worth knowing before you book April or late October. The island is seasonal, so at the very start and end of the warm months some beach tavernas, sunbed operators and hotels are either not yet open or already closing, and flights are thinner. The beaches are still beautiful and the swimming is possible, but check that the specific places you want are operating, because an early or late trip can be magical or frustrating depending on what has opened.

Before you go
What is the best month to visit Kefalonia for the beach?
Late May to mid June and September are the quiet sweet spots, with warm sea, reliable sun and far fewer people than the August peak. June gives summer weather without the full crowds, while September keeps the warm sea the long summer has built up. July and August are hottest and busiest with the warmest water, and May and October are cooler shoulder months that suit travellers who want space over heat.
When is the sea warmest in Kefalonia?
The Ionian is at its warmest in late July, August and into September, sitting around twenty five to twenty seven degrees Celsius after a long summer of heating, with sheltered shallow bays like Xi feeling warmer still. June has climbed to a comfortable twenty two or so, and even into October the sea holds around twenty two to twenty three degrees, which most swimmers still find pleasant.
Is Kefalonia worth visiting in May or October?
Yes, if you value quiet and cooler air over the warmest possible sea. May brings green hills, wildflowers, reopening tavernas and a sea around nineteen degrees that is bracing but swimmable at midday. October is mild with a sea still near twenty two degrees and very few crowds, though some businesses begin to wind down. Both are lovely for swimming and exploring without the August crush.
When is Kefalonia most crowded?
The peak is July and August, the European summer holidays, when the beaches, the cliff roads and the parking at Myrtos are at their busiest and prices are highest. Early June and September are far calmer while still warm. If you come in peak season, reach the famous beaches early in the morning or late in the afternoon to dodge the worst of the crush.
Does Kefalonia close down out of season?
Largely yes. Kefalonia is a seasonal island, and from November to April many beach tavernas, sunbed operators and resort hotels close, flights thin out and the weather turns wetter and cooler. The beaches are still beautiful for a walk, but for a swimming and sunbathing trip the season really runs from May to October. Check that what you want is open before booking outside those months.
