The verdict

Best for. Travellers near Argostoli who want a smaller, tidier golden sand cove with clear calm water, and swimmers happy with a compact beach over a long open sweep.

Best spot. The sheltered centre of the cove early for the calmest water, before the loungers fill and the neighbouring Makris Gialos crowd spills over.

Know this. It is the smaller twin of Makris Gialos next door, just as pretty and just as busy for its size in peak season. West facing and sheltered, so calmest in the morning.

The honest read

Platis Gialos is the smaller, tidier twin of Makris Gialos, and for some people that makes it the better of the pair. It sits in the same Lassi strip just south of Argostoli, a compact pocket of soft golden sand wrapped by low rocks, with clear, sheltered water that comes in gently. Where Makris Gialos next door spreads across two linked coves, Platis Gialos is a single neat bay, and on the right morning it has a more contained, almost tucked away feel a short walk from the capital.

The shelter is what shapes the swim. The cove is held by rocky edges that calm the open sea, so the water is usually flat and clear with an easy gradient, a relaxed swim that works for most ages. It faces broadly west like the rest of this coast, which means the stillest, clearest water is in the morning, and the afternoon sea breeze can put a gentle ripple on the surface. In a cove this protected that rarely amounts to much, but it is the honest reason to favour an early swim.

Now the trade off, which is the same one as its neighbour. Because Platis Gialos is small, it fills fast. The cove is genuinely lovely and close to Argostoli, so in July and August the loungers go down across most of the sand and the overflow from busy Makris Gialos finds its way here too. A compact beach with a big crowd can feel tight, so the smart play is the same as everywhere in Lassi, arrive early for room and calm water, or come in June or September when the cove is quiet and at its best.

Facilities are simpler than the bigger beaches but enough for an easy day. There are sunbeds and umbrellas to rent and a beach bar at the cove, with the full run of tavernas, shops and cafes of the Lassi resort just behind. The soft sand means no reef shoes needed, shade is mostly the umbrellas so bring cover, and a large hotel sits above the bay, so the setting is resort rather than wild, which is exactly what most people here are after.

Who should skip it. If you want space, drama or solitude, a compact resort cove minutes from the capital is the wrong call, and Myrtos, Petani or a remote northern beach will reward you more. But if you are staying around Argostoli and want a pretty, sheltered golden sand cove with easy water and a cold drink to hand, Platis Gialos is the quieter sized pick of the Lassi pair, best caught early or off peak.

Lassi, near Argostoli

Platis Gialos is in the Lassi resort strip just south of Argostoli, only a few kilometres from the centre and walkable from much of Lassi or a very short drive or taxi away. It sits right beside Makris Gialos, so the two coves are easy to combine. Parking near the cove is limited and fills quickly in high summer, another reason to come early.

Facilities are modest but enough. There are sunbeds and umbrellas to rent and a beach bar at the cove, with the full range of tavernas, cafes and shops of Lassi a short walk behind. These are operator run and seasonal, so opening times and prices are best confirmed locally before you rely on them.

Pack light. The soft sand means you can skip the reef shoes, shade is mostly the umbrellas so bring sun cover, and the sheltered water suits an easy swim. Take the morning for the calmest water and the best chance of space in this small cove, and wander next door to Makris Gialos if you want more room or a different beach bar for the afternoon.
