Gradakia

Gradakia is not a club in the Mykonos sense and has never tried to be one. It is a canteen bar set above a grey sand cove on the north edge of Lassi, a few minutes by car from Argostoli, and its whole appeal is scale. The sand runs barely seventy metres, a screen of cluster pines stands behind it, and on a still afternoon the cicadas are loud enough to notice over the water. For a couple that smallness is the draw rather than the drawback, as long as you read the hours right.

Our honest position, the same one we hold on the Kefalonia club directory, is that this island rewards the low key beach bar over the daybed empire, and Gradakia is one of the gentlest examples of the type. If you are pairing a slow swim with a cold drink rather than chasing a scene, the short walk down to this cove earns itself back by sundown.

The crowd is the thing to plan around. By late morning in July and August the central sand fills, the parasols crowd into tight rows, and anyone without a hired bed is pushed to the margins, while the music from the bar carries across a cove small enough for sound to reach every towel. The postcard version, calm water and pines and almost nobody, belongs to the early and the late hours rather than the middle of the day.

The quiet corners are the secret for two. Before the main strip, smaller pockets of sand hide among the cluster pines at either end, and the visitors who love Gradakia are usually the ones who found a shaded spot out there and stayed. That is where a couple should aim, and when: a pine shadow at the edge claimed early, or the last hour of the day. The cove faces west, so the sun drops behind the Vardiani islet and the Lixouri peninsula while you nurse a drink from the canteen, and that sunset is the most romantic thing it offers.

Food is honest and modest, a canteen of cold drinks, coffee, snacks and meze rather than a sit down kitchen, and the accounts that praise it praise exactly that. Where Gradakia falls short is where its size sets the limit. It is tiny, it crowds, shade for non renters is thin, the music can intrude, and no pricing is published in advance. Come with the right expectations and the small scale reads as intimacy rather than a shortage.

Gradakia sits on the quieter, more sheltered side of the Lassi resort area, a small bay usually less visited than the long stretches of grey gold sand just south. The water in front is shallow and clear, so you can wade a good way out before it deepens, part of why families settle here as readily as couples do. The cove lies just past the Lassi resort strip, a short ten minute drive out of Argostoli, with parking above it before a path drops you to the sand. A hire car is the natural way to reach it, though the Lassi resort strip is walkable if you are staying nearby. Booking, in the usual sense, does not apply. There is no reservation line and no table to hold, so the plan for two is a matter of timing rather than paperwork: come early for the swim, or come back for the sunset drink and let the day crowd drain away.
