Hanalei Bay is the north shore beach that quietly ruins you for others. A two mile crescent of golden sand curves beneath emerald mountains laced with waterfalls, and the historic pier reaches out over the water at the eastern end. For a couple, the pleasures are unhurried and cinematic, a slow swim in the calm summer water, a walk the length of the sand as the light turns, and a sunset from the pier while the peaks behind you glow pink and orange. It is one of the most beautiful bays in Hawaii, and it knows it.
The honest read is that this is a beach of two seasons. Through summer the water is calm, the swimming is easy and the bay is at its gentlest, which is when couples should come. In winter the north shore takes the swell, and Hanalei becomes one of Kauai's best surf breaks, with big waves and strong currents that turn swimming dangerous. Heavy rain also clouds the water where the Hanalei River meets the bay, sometimes more than the surf does, so timing matters. There are lifeguards at points along the bay, but always read the flags and the water.

Instead, the little town of Hanalei sits just behind the sand, a cluster of restaurants, cafes and bars where couples drift after the beach for a slow dinner and a drink. It is relaxed and local rather than a scene, the natural end to a day on the bay. Individual hours and menus belong to the venues and are to be confirmed, especially outside the summer season.
The pier and the western sand
The romance of Hanalei is free and out on the sand. The historic pier at the eastern end is the spot for photographs and, on calm days, a jump into the water, while the western end of the crescent frames the best sunset as the sun drops behind the headland and the mountains glow. Walk the length of the bay at golden hour and you have the north shore's finest evening, no reservation required. Mind the water in winter, when the surf takes over.
On Kauai's north shore
Hanalei Bay lies on the north shore of Kauai, about a forty minute drive from the airport at Lihue, reached on the coast road through the town of Hanalei that sits just behind the beach. Several beach parks give access along the two mile crescent, from Black Pot Beach Park by the pier at the eastern end to Waipa toward the west, each with its own parking, which fills early on summer days.
Come in summer for the calmest, safest water, and arrive early for both the parking and the light. Bring reef safe sun cream, water and a towel, use the beach park restrooms and showers, and check the lifeguard flags before you swim. In winter treat the bay as a place to watch the surf rather than enter it, and give the water a day or two to clear after heavy rain. There are lifeguards at points along the bay, but always read the water and treat calm conditions as typical rather than guaranteed.
