Khao Kalok is what a lot of people hope Hua Hin still is, a wide, wild beach with almost nothing built on it. It sits well south of the town near Pak Nam Pran, and the drive is the price of admission, but what you get in return is a long sweep of pale sand backed by trees, a dramatic limestone headland the locals call Skull Mountain, and the kind of space where you can walk for a long time and pass almost no one. This is a quiet beach for a quiet day, not a resort strip.
The water is the other reason to come. On a calm morning it is some of the clearest in the whole Hua Hin area, gentle and shallow enough for an easy swim, which is not always true of the browner, busier town beach to the north. Come early, because the wind tends to build through the afternoon, which cools the sand but stirs the sea and brings the kite surfers out at the windier end of the year. Judge the water each day and keep young children in the shallows, since there is no lifeguard anywhere along here.
What you will not find is service. There is no line of beach clubs, no jet ski touts and very few vendors, just a handful of small resorts and local seafood restaurants tucked into the casuarinas. That is the trade, and for most people it is the whole appeal. Bring water, sun cover, a hat and some cash, settle in under the trees, and treat Khao Kalok as a proper unplugged beach day with a walk up to the viewpoint at the southern headland to finish.

An hour south of Hua Hin
Khao Kalok Beach lies south of Hua Hin near Pak Nam Pran and Pranburi, roughly a forty minute to one hour drive from central Hua Hin depending on traffic. Follow the coast road south and turn off toward the beach near the small resorts at the foot of the headland. A car or a hired driver is by far the easiest way to reach it, since public transport this far south is limited.
There is informal parking by the small resorts and restaurants, but little in the way of facilities on the sand, so bring water, sun cover and cash for lunch at a local place. The water is usually calm in the morning and livelier in the afternoon wind, and there is no lifeguard, so take care and keep an eye on children. Finish with the short climb to the Khao Kalok viewpoint for the view along the beach.
