The verdict

Best for. Confident swimmers and snorkellers who come for the colour of the water and the Mount Athos view, and do not mind a lively beach bar behind them.

Best spot. The free zone away from the bar in the early morning, when the cove is still and the turquoise is at its clearest.

Know this. A campsite and a music bar sit behind the sand, so the calm is a morning luxury, not an all day one. For gentle shallows with small children, Karydi is the better cove.

The honest read

Platanitsi is the kind of cove people photograph and then argue about which beach in Sithonia is the most beautiful. It is a short bow of soft sand a few kilometres north of Sarti, held in a frame of pine, and the water is the reason to come. On a still morning it reads as a deep, luminous turquoise, sandy underfoot rather than stony, with Mount Athos rising clean across the gulf. For sheer colour it is hard to better on this coast, and a snorkeller will find the clear water rewards a slow swim along the edges.

The honest caveat is about depth and mood. Unlike the family bays to the north, the seabed here deepens fairly soon, so this is a swimmer's beach more than a toddler's paddling pool. Behind the sand sits a campsite, and the beach bar that comes with it brings music and a young, social crowd through the day. None of that spoils the place, but it does mean the serenity the photographs promise is a question of timing. Arrive late in August and you meet the scene, not the stillness.

Read it right and Platanitsi gives you both. Come early, settle in the free zone away from the bar, and the cove is yours with the water at its clearest and the Athos view sharp in the morning light. Stay for the afternoon if you want the music and the company. If you came for gentle, ankle deep shallows with children, the sheltered bay at Karydi is the kinder choice, and for the same Mount Athos view with full service and a town behind you, the long beach at Sarti just south is the easy alternative.

The club layer

Clubs on this beach

Platanitsi has a beach bar tied to the campsite behind it rather than a polished club, and the rest of the sand is free. Operators, hours and prices move with the season, so confirm before you go and bring your own umbrella for the quieter end.

Getting there and essentials

North of Sarti, Sithonia

Platanitsi lies a few kilometres north of Sarti on the east coast of Sithonia, signed off the coast road that runs down the peninsula. A track leads to parking near the campsite, and the sand is a short, level walk from there.

A car is the simplest way to reach it, and timing makes the day. Come early for the clearest water, the calmest cove and the pick of a free patch in the shade, and let the afternoon bring the music and the company.

Common questions about Platanitsi

Why is Platanitsi beach so admired?

It is one of the most photogenic beaches near Sarti on Sithonia, a short bow of sand in a pine framed cove with clear turquoise water and a view across to Mount Athos. The colour of the sea is the draw, deep and luminous on a still morning, which is why it earns its place even with a lively crowd.

Is the water at Platanitsi shallow?

Not especially. The seabed is sandy but it deepens fairly soon, without the long, ankle deep shallows of a family bay, so it suits confident swimmers more than toddlers. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed, and the open aspect can pick up a breeze, so families with small children may prefer a gentler cove.

Is Platanitsi a quiet beach or a party beach?

It is both, depending on the hour. A campsite sits behind the sand and the beach bar draws a young crowd with music through the day, so the centre is social. The early morning is the quiet, clear window, and the freer zones away from the bar are where you settle for calm.

Are there sunbeds and facilities at Platanitsi?

Part of the beach is organised with a beach bar that sets out sunbeds and umbrellas, and the campsite behind has a market and showers, with operators best confirmed for the season. Other stretches are free for your own umbrella, which is the calmer choice.

Which calmer beach is near Platanitsi?

For gentle, shallow water the sheltered bays at Karydi and Vourvourou to the north are the easier call, and the town beach at Sarti just south gives you full service and the same Mount Athos view. The Halkidiki hub and the beach clubs guide help you match the beach to the day.
