The beach that carries the name is the wild gray sand at the river mouth, backed by mangrove and watched over by Punta Nosara, and it is one of the quietest, most atmospheric stretches on the whole Nicoya coast. What it is not is a swimming beach. The river meets the sea here, the water turns brackish and the currents are unpredictable, so this is a shore for a barefoot walk at dawn, for the fishermen hauling their pangas and for the pelicans, not for a careless plunge.
The genuine swimming and surf sit a short drive south. Playa Pelada is the small rocky cove between Nosara and Guiones, with tide pools, a blowhole on a big swell and the best sunset on this coast, and it is where locals gather with a cold drink at the end of the day. Playa Guiones is the long open beach beyond it, a beginner and intermediate surf break that works almost every day of the year and the reason the town fills with surfers and yoga schools. Treat the three beaches as one place with three moods.
For a traveller who reads a coast through its kitchen, Nosara is a quiet feast. The town behind Guiones is dense with organic cafes, sourdough bakeries, smoothie counters and open air taverns, a wellness town that learned to cook. Above Pelada, La Luna serves Mediterranean plates with the sunset in the window, while Olga's is the honest soda on the same sand for whole fish and rice and beans. The Gilded Iguana near Guiones pairs a pool and a kitchen with the surf, and the Saturday organic market is where the valley brings its produce.
Skip the idea that Nosara owes you a developed beach scene. There are no rows of daybeds, no thumping club on the sand, and that is the entire point. The famous spectacle here is not a venue but the olive ridley arribada at nearby Playa Ostional in the green season, when thousands of turtles come ashore to nest. Come for the wild river mouth, the cove at Pelada, the surf at Guiones and the long lazy lunches in between, and you will understand why people who find Nosara tend to stay.

Playa Nosara, Nicoya, Guanacaste
Nosara sits on the western Nicoya peninsula, about two and a half hours by road from Liberia airport on a route that turns rough and often unpaved near the coast, so allow time and consider a higher clearance vehicle. The small Nosara airstrip takes domestic flights for those who would rather skip the drive. The river mouth beach is reached through the old village, while Pelada and Guiones each have their own access tracks and small parking lots.
Bring water, sun cover and reef safe products, as shade and shops are scarce on the sand and the town sits back from the beach. The swimming at Pelada and the surf at Guiones are usually reliable, but treat that as typical rather than guaranteed, respect the river mouth currents at Nosara itself, and time a green season visit around the Ostional arribada for the wildlife of a lifetime.

Use caution. The main Playa Nosara beach sits at a river mouth where currents and murky water are common, so it is better for walking and watching fishermen than for a swim. For a gentler dip head to the sheltered cove at Playa Pelada, and for surf go to Playa Guiones. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed.
