The verdict

Best for. Confident swimmers and surfers who want an open beach with a relaxed, local neighbourhood behind it.

Best spot. The patrolled section near the surf club, where flagged swimming and an artificial reef shape the surf.

Know this. This is an open ocean beach with real surf and currents, so swim between the flags and skip the unpatrolled stretches.

The honest read

Palm Beach is the Gold Coast at its most local. It runs as a long open sweep of sand between the Currumbin and Tallebudgera creek mouths, with low rise homes and a relaxed neighbourhood feel rather than the towers and crowds of the central strip.

For years this was the quiet, slightly overlooked stretch, and that is exactly why people who live here love it. In recent years a wave of good cafes and small restaurants has given it a low key dining scene, but the beach itself stays uncrowded most days.

The water is honest open ocean. There is real surf and there are real currents, so this is a beach for confident swimmers and surfers rather than a sheltered paddling spot. An artificial reef offshore shapes the swell near the patrolled section.

If you want calm water for small children, the sheltered creek mouths at Currumbin and Tallebudgera sit at either end and are far gentler. Palm Beach is better for a proper swim, a surf and a long walk on a wide, quiet beach.

Who might want more. If you came for a buzzing scene, Surfers Paradise is livelier, and if you want flat calm water, the creeks nearby are the better call. For an open, local, unhurried beach day, Palm Beach delivers.

Common questions about Palm Beach
