Currumbin Beach
Best for. Families and beginner surfers who want a calm creek on one side and a gentle break on the other.
Best spot. Currumbin Alley, where the sheltered creek mouth stays calm and shallow for children.
Know this. The creek runs on the tide, so the calmest, clearest paddling comes around the incoming high water.
Currumbin is two beaches in one, and that is its charm. On the sea side you get an open patrolled surf beach, while around the corner the creek mouth, known as the Alley, runs as a sheltered tidal channel that small children can paddle in safely.
The Alley is the reason families love it. On an incoming tide the creek fills with clear, calm water over sandy flats, and it becomes one of the gentlest places to take young swimmers on the whole coast. It is also where countless Gold Coasters learned to surf.
Over the open beach sits Elephant Rock, the headland landmark with a lookout and a memorial, and a grassy foreshore with picnic spots and cafes. It is an easy, green, unhurried setting rather than a wall of towers.
The creek moves with the tide, so timing matters. Around low water the channel can run shallow and the current at the mouth picks up, while the incoming tide brings the calmest, clearest paddling. Plan around the tide and it rarely disappoints.
Who might want more buzz. If you want nightlife and a big scene, Currumbin is quiet and Surfers Paradise is the livelier base. For a calm family day with a creek and a gentle break, Currumbin is hard to beat.

This is public sand with no daybed club on the beach itself. For a club style day with loungers and table service near Currumbin Beach, we gather the options in the Gold Coast beach clubs directory.
Currumbin, southern Gold Coast
Currumbin sits on the southern Gold Coast between Palm Beach and Tugun, a short drive from both Gold Coast Airport and Burleigh Heads.
Parking runs along the foreshore and beside the creek at the Alley, with grassy picnic areas and an easy walk to the beach and lookout.
Facilities are good, with surf clubs, showers and cafes nearby. Paddle in the sheltered creek on the incoming tide and swim between the flags on the open beach.

Common questions about Currumbin Beach
Is Currumbin Alley good for families?
Yes. The creek mouth at the Alley fills with calm, clear water on the incoming tide and runs shallow over sandy flats, which makes it one of the gentlest spots for young swimmers on the Gold Coast.
Can beginners surf at Currumbin?
Yes. The Alley is a classic learner break with gentle, forgiving waves, which is why generations of Gold Coasters first surfed here. Conditions are easiest on smaller, cleaner days.
When is the creek at Currumbin calmest?
Around the incoming high tide, when the channel fills with clear water and the current eases. On a falling tide the mouth runs shallower and the current strengthens, so plan around the tide.
Is Currumbin Beach patrolled?
The open beach is patrolled with flagged swimming in season by the local surf clubs. Patrol times vary through the year, so check the current flags and swim between them.
What is Elephant Rock at Currumbin?
Elephant Rock is the headland landmark above the southern end of the beach, with a lookout and a memorial. It is an easy walk and gives a fine view along the coast and the creek mouth.
