Miami Beach Gold Coast
Best for. Visitors who want a wide, uncrowded local surf beach within easy reach of Burleigh Heads and the Nobby village.
Best spot. The patrolled flags by the Miami surf club, with the Miami headland lookout a short walk to the south.
Know this. This is open surf swimming, so choose a settled day, swim between the flags and keep young children close.
Miami Beach is one of the central Gold Coast's quiet achievers. It is a wide, open surf beach that most visitors drive straight past on their way to Burleigh, which is exactly why locals like it. The sand is generous, the crowds are thinner, and the towers thin out here too.
It runs as a long, easygoing stretch between Nobby Beach to the north and Burleigh Heads to the south, so it is the natural base if you want space on the sand with two of the coast's best beach villages a short hop away. The Nobby dining strip and the Burleigh cafes and point are both within minutes.
At the southern end the Miami headland gives a short lookout walk and a different angle on the coast, a small reward for a beach that does not trade on big sights. The vibe is residential and relaxed rather than touristy.
The swimming is honest open surf. There is no sheltering headland on the main beach, so the water carries normal Gold Coast beach break. It is fine for confident swimmers and bodyboarders on a settled day, but it is not a calm bay for toddlers. Swim between the flags and check the conditions.
Who should skip it. If you want calm, sheltered family water, head to Tallebudgera Creek or the Coolangatta corner. If you want a wide, uncrowded surf beach with great villages either side, Miami is an easy yes.
