The verdict

Best for. Families and couples who want a relaxed patrolled beach with excellent food and shopping close by.

Best spot. Kurrawa Beach by the surf club, the widest patrolled stretch with grassy parkland behind for a base.

Know this. It is open ocean with surf, so keep to the flags, while the dining and parkland behind the sand are the real draw.

The honest read

Broadbeach is what Surfers Paradise would be if it calmed down and grew a lawn. It sits just to the south, with the same wide golden sand but lower buildings, grassy parklands behind the beach and a far more relaxed feel.

The dining is the genuine headline. The streets behind the sand hold one of the best eating precincts on the coast, and the beach itself is backed by Kurrawa Park, a long green strip that makes a comfortable base for a family day.

The sand at Kurrawa is wide and patrolled, and the surf club runs a strong lifeguard operation. It is open ocean, though, so the flags matter here just as much as at any Gold Coast beach.

Pacific Fair and The Star sit a short walk or tram ride away, so you can pair a beach morning with shopping or a meal without moving the car. It is an easy, well rounded base.

Who might want more. If you are chasing a dramatic headland or a famous surf break, Burleigh Heads to the south delivers that. Broadbeach is about comfort, greenery and food rather than spectacle.

Central Gold Coast, Queensland

Broadbeach sits just south of Surfers Paradise on the central Gold Coast, about twenty minutes north of Gold Coast Airport, with the tram running through it.

Parking sits around the parklands and the shopping centres, and the beach is an easy walk from the dining streets and from Pacific Fair.

Facilities are excellent, with a surf club, showers, cafes and restaurants close to the sand. Swim only in the flagged, patrolled zones.

Common questions about Broadbeach

Is Broadbeach better than Surfers Paradise?

For a relaxed family day it often is. Broadbeach has the same wide sand but lower buildings, parkland behind and a stronger dining scene, while Surfers offers more nightlife and energy.

Is Broadbeach good for families?

Yes. The patrolled sand, grassy parkland behind and easy facilities make it one of the more comfortable central Gold Coast beaches for families, as long as you swim between the flags.

Is Broadbeach patrolled?

Yes. Kurrawa Beach and the main Broadbeach are patrolled daily by lifeguards with flagged swimming zones. As open ocean, the flags should always guide where you swim.

What is there to do at Broadbeach besides the beach?

The dining precinct behind the sand is a major draw, and Pacific Fair shopping and The Star are a short walk or tram ride away, so a beach day pairs easily with food and shopping.

When is the best time to visit Broadbeach?

Spring, from September to November, brings warm and drier weather before the busy summer season, with comfortable sand and water.
