Kirra Beach
Best for. Surfers chasing the point and families who want the calm corner just beside it.
Best spot. The sheltered patrolled corner tucked beside Kirra Point, where the water is gentlest.
Know this. Kirra only truly fires on the right swell and sand, so most days it is a relaxed patrolled beach rather than a heaving lineup.
Kirra is a name surfers say with reverence. On the right swell and the right sand bank it produces long, fast barrels that rank among the best waves anywhere, part of the Superbank that links the southern points into one long ride.
But here is the honest part. Kirra does not fire every day, or even most days. Sand pumping along the coast changed how the bank behaves, and many visits land on a friendly, ordinary patrolled beach rather than a roaring lineup. Set your expectations accordingly.
For families that is good news. The corner tucked beside the point stays sheltered and gentle, with soft sand and a surf club behind it, so non surfers get a calm swim while the surfers watch the point for the day it switches on.
The town behind is low rise and relaxed, an easy walk from Coolangatta and Greenmount. The Kirra hill lookout gives a fine view down the points, and the cafes along the parade keep a local, unhurried feel.
Who might be let down. If you came purely to surf Kirra at its best, you may wait days or arrive between swells. Check the forecast, and treat any session as a bonus rather than a guarantee.

Common questions about Kirra Beach
Is Kirra Beach good for swimming?
Yes, in the sheltered corner beside the point, which stays calmer and suits families. The open beach carries more surf, so swim between the patrol flags for the gentlest water.
When does Kirra surf break work best?
Kirra needs the right swell direction and a well formed sand bank, often through autumn and the cyclone swell season. It does not break every day, so check the forecast before you plan a session.
Is Kirra Beach patrolled?
It is patrolled with flagged swimming in season by the Kirra surf club. Patrol times vary through the year, so check the current flags and swim between them.
Can beginners surf at Kirra?
On small, gentle days yes, but Kirra at its best is a fast, hollow wave for experienced surfers. Beginners are usually better served by the mellow beach breaks and the calm corner.
How far is Kirra from Coolangatta?
A short, flat walk of a few minutes south along the foreshore, so you can easily combine Kirra, Coolangatta and Greenmount in one visit.
