Indie Beach sits toward the southern end of Pampelonne, out by Bonne Terrasse where the famous strip begins to quieten, and it is the bohemian member of the Indie Group family that also runs Playamigos on the same sand. The look is deliberate, weathered driftwood, neutral linen tones and a hippie chic the club leans into, and the pitch is a loose Mediterranean day rather than the full Saint Tropez spectacle a few clubs to the north.

Our read for the French Riviera club directory is that Pampelonne is the most expensive sand in France to lie on, and its clubs range from the merely pricey to the frankly eye watering. Indie sits at the gentler end of that scale. An independent listing puts a sunbed at 50 euros and a double bed at 130, which on this beach is close to the accessible entry point, and the public sand still runs between the concessions if you would rather not pay at all.

The draw here is tone. Indie trades the velvet rope energy of the headline clubs for a looser, barefoot mood, all weathered wood, soft neutrals and a soundtrack the club itself calls rock and roll. The kitchen is Mediterranean and built for sharing, ceviche and tapas, grilled fish, plates like king crab and avocado tartare or a lobster spaghetti, with an a la carte that an independent listing pegs from about 8 to 120 euros and an average meal around 45. That is not cheap, but on Pampelonne it reads as measured rather than punishing.

The day runs in two gears. Lunch and the long afternoon on the sunbeds are the calm, and as the light drops the club tips into aperitif hour with musical animations and a livelier bar, the closest Indie comes to the party the bigger names run from noon. If a building crescendo and a bottle list is the point of your trip, this is the wrong door, and Nikki Beach up the strip is the honest alternative. If you want the same legendary sand at a slower pulse, Indie is the smarter pick.

The catch is the one every Pampelonne club shares, you are paying resort money for a beach you could technically reach for free. A 50 euro sunbed is fair by local standards but steep by any other, the minimum spend is unpublished and August books out, so the savvy move is to reserve the single transat rather than the pricier double bed unless the day is a special one, and to treat the lunch as the main line on the bill rather than an afterthought. The club is on the Route de Bonne Terrasse at the southern end of Pampelonne, a drive out from Ramatuelle or Saint Tropez, and it lists parking and valet parking, which on this beach in August is worth almost as much as the sunbed. In peak season the approach roads and the car parks fill early, so arrive before the lunch rush or come by boat, as a good number do.
