Mellow sand by day, and a nightlife that lives a block inland on Duval Street.

The verdict

  • Best forTravellers who want easy daytime beach time and a lively night, as long as they know the party is Duval Street in Key West rather than the beach itself.
  • Top pickSmathers Beach for the liveliest daytime strip, with South Beach the calm pocket at the end of Duval to walk straight into the bars.
  • One thing to knowThe Keys are not a beach party destination. The beaches are small, calm and natural, and the nightlife is the bars of Key West, so set your expectations to that before you book.

The Florida Keys are a snorkel, paddle and sunset chain, a string of small natural beaches and clear shallow water running out to Key West. What they are not is a beach club coast, and it is worth being clear about that before you arrive. The famous Key West party is real and a lot of fun, but almost none of it happens on the sand.

That party is Duval Street, the half mile spine of Key West lined with open air bars, live music and rooftop spots, capped each evening by the sunset crowd at Mallory Square and turned up to full volume during the costumed nights of Fantasy Fest each autumn. It is one of the great walkable bar streets in the country, and it sits a block back from the water rather than on the beach.

The beaches themselves are mostly calm family swims and snorkel coves, and even the liveliest are mellow by Mediterranean standards. The closest to a scene are the Key West beaches, where a sociable daytime crowd gathers before the night moves into town. We have ranked the beaches below by how much daytime life each carries and how close it sits to the night, with each entry linked to its full guide, and conditions here are typical rather than guaranteed.

Ranked by daytime life and the walk to the night

Five of the liveliest beaches in the Florida Keys

Sociable by day, with Duval a block away.

01
Key West

Smathers Beach

The longest beach in Key West and the liveliest by day, a built strip of sun, watersports and food trucks that pulls the biggest and most sociable crowd, with a spring break buzz in season. There are no clubs on the sand and the swim is ordinary, but for daytime energy and a young holiday crowd this is the closest the Keys come to a beach scene. The default if you want life by the water.

02
Key West

South Beach Key West

The tiny pocket beach at the very end of Duval Street, calm and central, with a cafe on the sand. The beach itself is quiet and small, but its trump card is position, because you step straight off it into the heart of the Key West bar strip. The pick when you want a quick dip and then the shortest possible walk to the night.

03
Key West

Higgs Beach

The easygoing county beach with a pier, a beachfront restaurant and bar and a sociable, unhurried daytime mood. It is a gentle swim rather than a scene, but the beachfront bar makes it an easy place for a drink by the water before the evening gets going in town. A relaxed, central option that bridges the beach day and the night.

04
Key West

Fort Zachary Taylor

The best sunset gathering in Key West, a state park where a friendly crowd assembles for the evening light and the snorkel over the old jetties. It closes at sundown, so it is an atmosphere rather than a night spot, but for the golden hour scene before you head into town it is the finest in Key West. On the list for the sunset, not the clubbing.

05
Marathon

Sombrero Beach

The sociable weekend beach up the chain in Marathon, palm backed, clean and cheerful, busy on a summer Saturday with families and day trippers. It is firmly a family and day beach with no nightlife of its own, but it is the liveliest sand outside Key West and a pleasant, social stop if you are based mid Keys. Here for the daytime buzz rather than any party.

The honest read

Be honest, the party is on Duval, not the sand

The honest truth is that there is no beach party in the Florida Keys the way there is in Ibiza or Mykonos, and anyone booking the Keys for clubbing on the sand has misread the place. The beaches are small, shallow, natural and calm, built for snorkelling, paddling and sunsets, and not one of them has a club on it. What the Keys have instead is one of the great bar streets in the country.

That street is Duval, the spine of Key West, a walkable run of open air bars, live music, rooftop spots and the famous sunset crowd at Mallory Square, plus the wild costumed nights of Fantasy Fest each autumn. The honest move is to base in Key West, treat Smathers and Higgs as your daytime beach, and let the night happen on Duval, a block back from the water rather than on it.

If a beach club party is truly the goal, this is not the chain for it, and you would be happier somewhere built around clubs on the sand such as Miami. But for a holiday that pairs gentle, beautiful beaches with a genuinely fun walkable night, Key West is hard to beat. The winter high season is the busiest and liveliest stretch, with Fantasy Fest the wildest week in late autumn, and conditions and events change yearly so confirm before you travel.

The club layer

Beaches by day, the bars of Duval by night

See Florida Keys beach clubs

The Keys are light on the European style beach club, and access runs mostly through public beaches, state parks and a handful of resort day passes rather than a row of loungers and a DJ. The nightlife is the bars of Duval Street in Key West rather than a club on the sand, which is the honest shape of the place. Operators, opening status and any fees shift by season and we never invent them, so anything we cannot confirm says to be confirmed. We keep the live list on the directory and pass your enquiry on so a club can confirm availability.

Good questions

Before you go

Do the Florida Keys have a beach party scene?

Not on the sand. The beaches are small, calm and natural, with no beach clubs. The party is Duval Street in Key West, a walkable strip of open air bars, live music and the famous sunset crowd, which sits a block back from the water rather than on the beach itself.

Which Florida Keys beach is the liveliest?

Smathers Beach in Key West, the longest beach in town, draws the biggest and most sociable daytime crowd with watersports and food trucks. South Beach is the calm pocket at the end of Duval if you want to step straight off the sand into the bars.

Where is the nightlife in Key West?

Duval Street is the heart of it, half a mile of open air bars, rooftop spots and live music, with the sunset gathering at Mallory Square and the costumed Fantasy Fest each autumn. The beaches are for the day, the night belongs to Duval.

Is Key West or Miami better for a beach party?

They are different animals. Miami has the South Beach club scene on the sand, while Key West has small calm beaches and a walkable bar street. For a beach club party choose Miami. For a laid back, walkable night with gentle beaches by day, Key West wins.

When is the best time for nightlife in the Florida Keys?

The winter high season is the busiest and liveliest stretch, and Fantasy Fest in late October is the wildest week of the year in Key West. Summer is hotter and quieter. Conditions and events change yearly, so confirm dates before you travel.
