The Florida Keys run on a simple two season rhythm, and getting the timing right matters more here than the sand does. There is a dry winter and a wet summer, and the gap between them is the difference between calm clear water under blue skies and a humid afternoon of thunderstorms with seaweed on the shore. The water itself is warm enough to swim all year, so the question is really about the air, the rain, the crowds and the storm risk.
The dry season runs roughly from December to May and is the prime time, with warm sunny days, low humidity, the calmest clearest water and the smallest chance of a storm. It is also the busiest and dearest, peaking around the winter holidays and the spring break weeks of February and March, when snowbirds and students fill the islands. Book ahead and expect company on the best beaches.
The wet season from June to November flips the script. The heat and humidity climb, afternoon thunderstorms become a near daily routine, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs right through it, with the highest risk from August to October. Sargassum seaweed also drifts in through the warm months and can pile up on the ocean side beaches. Most summer days are still fine, but the gamble is real, and it is reflected in the lower prices and thinner crowds.
The smart windows for most travellers are the shoulders. March and April pair the best of the dry season weather with crowds that are starting to thin, while late April, May and November offer softer prices and fewer people with conditions that are usually still good. Below is the month by month picture to help you choose.
Month by month at a glance
| Month | Air | Sea | Rain | Crowd | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 24C | 23C | Low | Busy | Cool dry winter, calm clear water and fine sun, a lovely if popular beach month. |
| February | 25C | 23C | Low | Peak | Dry and sunny with the snowbird and spring break crowds building toward the peak. |
| March | 26C | 24C | Low | Peak | One of the best months, warm dry weather and clear water, but spring break busy. |
| April | 28C | 25C | Low | Busy | Warm, dry and gorgeous as the deepest crowds ease, a top window for the beach. |
| May | 29C | 27C | Moderate | Steady | Hot and lovely early on as the wet pattern starts to build, good value before summer. |
| June | 31C | 28C | High | Steady | Hot and humid, the rains and the hurricane season open, seaweed begins to appear. |
| July | 32C | 30C | High | Steady | Hot with near daily storms and the warmest water, lively but sweaty and weedy. |
| August | 32C | 30C | High | Quiet | The hottest and stormiest stretch with rising hurricane risk, quiet and cheap. |
| September | 31C | 30C | Very high | Quiet | The wettest month and the peak of hurricane season, the quietest time of all. |
| October | 30C | 29C | High | Steady | Still warm with the storm risk easing late, a gamble that can pay off with deals. |
| November | 27C | 26C | Moderate | Steady | Drying out and cooling as the season turns, a fine value shoulder before winter. |
| December | 25C | 24C | Low | Busy | The dry winter returns with calm clear water, busy and dear around the holidays. |
When each month earns its place
March. Peak dry season at its best, with warm sunny days, low humidity and clear calm water, plus the events and the buzz that come with the spring season. The catch is the spring break crowd, which fills the beaches and the bars and pushes prices up, so book early and expect company, but the weather is about as good as the Keys get.
April. Arguably the sweet spot of the year. The weather is still firmly dry season, warm and bright with calm water, while the deepest winter and spring break crowds have begun to thin out after Easter. That combination of fine conditions and easing numbers makes April a smart time to come for the beach and the reef alike.
July. Full Keys summer, hot and humid with the warmest water of the year and long daylight, good for early starts on the water before the heat peaks. The trade is the near daily afternoon thunderstorm, the rising humidity and the sargassum seaweed on the ocean side, so plan mornings on the water and have an indoor backup for the storms.
September. The month to approach with caution, the wettest of the year and the statistical peak of hurricane season, which is exactly why it is the quietest and cheapest. If you watch the forecast, keep plans flexible and carry good insurance, you can find the islands calm and almost empty, but the storm gamble is at its highest here.
December. The return of the dry season and a fine time to swap a northern winter for warm calm water and blue skies. Early December is quieter before the holidays arrive, then the Christmas and New Year weeks bring the crowds and the highest prices of the season, so time it to the front of the month if you want the weather without the crush.

Before you go
What is the best month to visit the Florida Keys?
March and April are the sweet spot, with warm dry sunny days, calm clear water and the storm risk still low, just as the deepest winter crowds begin to ease after the spring break peak. The whole dry season from December to May is reliable for the beach, but the late winter and early spring window pairs the best weather with slightly thinner crowds and better value than the holiday weeks.
Is the sea warm enough to swim year round in the Florida Keys?
Yes, the water is swimmable all year. It sits at a comfortable low to mid twenties Celsius even in the coolest winter weeks and climbs to a bath like high twenties through summer. Winter is the most pleasant for a long swim because the air is dry and the sea is clear, while summer water is warmest but comes with humidity, storms and seaweed.
When is hurricane season in the Florida Keys?
The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June to November, with the highest risk concentrated from August to October. Most summer days pass with nothing worse than an afternoon thunderstorm, but the Keys are exposed and a serious storm can force evacuations and closures, so travel in that window with flexible plans and good insurance and keep an eye on the forecast.
What is sargassum seaweed and when is it worst in the Florida Keys?
Sargassum is a brown floating seaweed that drifts in from the open Atlantic and washes up on the ocean side beaches, where it can pile up and smell as it breaks down. It is most common and heaviest through the warm months, roughly late spring to summer, and varies a lot week to week and beach to beach. Sheltered coves like Sombrero usually stay cleaner than the open Atlantic shores.
When are the Florida Keys quietest and cheapest?
Late summer and early autumn, roughly August to early October, are the quietest and cheapest, because the heat, the storms and the peak hurricane risk keep visitors away. You can find real deals then if you accept the weather gamble. The shoulder weeks of late April, May and November are a smarter balance, with softer prices, fewer people and still mostly good conditions.
