The Best Beaches for Sunset in the Florida Keys

A sunset famous coast where the beaches mostly face the wrong way.

The verdict

  • Best forTravellers who know the Keys sell the sunset and want the handful of beaches that actually face the open western water rather than the Atlantic.
  • Top pickFort Zachary Taylor in Key West, a tree backed shore at the island's southwest tip that faces the sundown head on.
  • One thing to knowThe famous Key West sunset is Mallory Square, a waterfront celebration and not a beach. For sand, the genuine west facing choice is Fort Zach.

The Florida Keys may be the most sunset obsessed place in America, a chain of low islands where the nightly drop of the sun into the gulf is a genuine event with a crowd and a countdown. Yet the geography hides an honest catch that catches a lot of first time visitors out, because the beaches and the best sunsets are not always in the same place, and knowing why saves you a disappointing evening.

The reason is the lie of the land. The Keys run roughly east to west with the Atlantic on their southern side, so most of the named beaches, Sombrero in Marathon, Higgs and Smathers in Key West, face south rather than west. The sun sets off to one side over the water rather than straight ahead, lovely but never the head on sea sundown people imagine. The famous show, the one in the photographs, happens on the gulf side and above all at Mallory Square, which is a waterfront plaza and not a beach at all.

The exceptions are worth chasing. Fort Zachary Taylor sits at the southwest tip of Key West and genuinely faces the open water, a tree backed shore that turns gold as the sun drops, the best beach sunset in the islands. Up the chain, the gulf side of Bahia Honda gives a wide western sky with the old bridge in silhouette. Those are the beaches where you get sand under your feet and the sun in the sea at once.

We have ranked the beaches below by how completely each delivers the end of day, weighing aspect and setting and atmosphere over beauty alone. Each entry links to its full guide for access and the honest read on crowds, and conditions are typical rather than guaranteed with any park hours or operator detail we cannot verify marked to be confirmed.

Ranked by the light and the aspect

Five of the best beaches for sunset in the Florida Keys

The west facing few for the show, the south coast for the calm.

01
Key West

Fort Zachary Taylor Beach

The best beach sunset in the Keys, a tree backed shore inside the historic state park at the southwest tip of Key West that genuinely faces the open water. The sun drops head on into the sea, the Australian pines throwing long shade behind you, and the crowd is calmer and the setting wilder than the Mallory Square circus a short way off. It is a paid state park with set hours, so check before you go. On the list as the one beach here that puts the sand and the sundown together.

02
Big Pine area

Bahia Honda Beach

The most celebrated beach in the Keys, a state park of pale sand and turquoise shallows whose gulf side opens to a wide western sky with the old Bahia Honda bridge standing in silhouette as the light fades. The Atlantic side faces south, so for the sundown you want the bay side and the bridge view. It is a busy, much loved park with limited daily entry. On the list for the most photogenic setting and a genuine western horizon.

03
Marathon

Sombrero Beach

The broad, well kept town beach of Marathon, a curve of soft sand and calm shallow water with palms and picnic space behind, the easy choice in the Middle Keys. It faces roughly south rather than west, so the sun sets off to the side rather than head on, but the wide open horizon and the gentle water make it a relaxed and pretty place to watch the colour. Free and family friendly. On the list for an easygoing Middle Keys evening on the sand.

04
Key West

Smathers Beach

The longest beach in Key West, a wide strip of imported sand along the south shore with watersports, food trucks and an open sky. It faces south, so it is more a sunrise and daytime beach than a head on sunset, but the broad horizon catches plenty of late colour and it sits close to the Mallory Square scene for those who want both. Lively and central rather than wild. On the list for a sociable, easy evening with the famous square nearby.

05
Key West

Higgs Beach

A sociable Key West town beach with a long pier, palms and a popular seafront restaurant, the place locals gather for an easy evening. It faces south rather than west, so the sundown is a soft sideways glow over the water rather than the main act, but the pier and the laid back scene make it a pleasant spot to end a day. Free and walkable from town. On the list for the relaxed local atmosphere and an after dark meal close by.

The honest read

Be honest, the show is on the gulf side

The honest read is that the Keys' sunset reputation is built on the gulf side and Mallory Square more than on the beaches, and that several of the most popular beaches face the wrong way for a head on sea sundown. Sombrero, Higgs and Smathers all open to the south Atlantic, so the sun slides down to one side over the water rather than dropping straight ahead. They are lovely beaches for the day, just not the place for the postcard sunset most people picture.

The famous Key West sunset is Mallory Square, a nightly waterfront celebration of street performers, vendors and a big happy crowd, and it is genuinely worth doing once, but it is a plaza with no sand. For the beach version of the same west facing show, Fort Zachary Taylor a short way along the island is the answer, quieter and wilder with the sun in the open sea. Up the chain, the bay side of Bahia Honda gives the wide western sky and the old bridge silhouette.

Timing matters here as much as place. Winter and spring bring the driest, clearest skies and the most reliable evenings, which is also the busy, pricier high season. Summer is hot and humid with afternoon storms that can wreck a sunset or set it on fire, and the autumn carries hurricane season. State park beaches have set hours and limited daily entry, so conditions are typical rather than guaranteed and we mark anything we cannot confirm as to be confirmed.

The club layer

Where to settle for the golden hour

See Florida Keys beach clubs

The Keys keep things low key and American rather than running a glossy beach club circuit, so the sunset scene is more a waterfront tiki bar, a resort beach or a state park bench than a daybed and a DJ, with the liveliest evening crowds gathering in Key West and around Marathon. The state park beaches like Fort Zachary Taylor and Bahia Honda are about the sand and the sky rather than service, and they close at set hours. Operators and opening status shift through the season, so we keep the live list on the directory. Tell us your dates and the kind of evening you want and we pass the enquiry on to confirm what is open.

Good questions

Before you go

Which Florida Keys beach has the best sunset?

Fort Zachary Taylor in Key West is the best beach sunset in the Keys, a tree backed shore at the southwest tip of the island that faces the open water and turns golden as the sun drops. Bahia Honda is the close second from its gulf side. The Keys islands mostly face the Atlantic, so a genuine head on sea sundown takes a little planning.

Is Mallory Square or a beach better for sunset in Key West?

Mallory Square is the famous Key West sunset, a nightly waterfront celebration of street performers and crowds, but it is a square and not a beach. For sand under your feet, Fort Zachary Taylor nearby gives a quieter west facing beach version of the same show. Do both on different evenings, one for the spectacle and one for the calm.

Why do most Florida Keys beaches not face the sunset?

The Keys islands run roughly east to west with the Atlantic on their south side, so most of the named beaches like Sombrero, Higgs and Smathers face south rather than west. The sun sets off to one side over the water rather than head on. The west facing exceptions are Fort Zachary Taylor and the gulf side of Bahia Honda.

Where can I watch the sunset in Marathon and the Middle Keys?

Sombrero Beach in Marathon is the broad, open choice with a wide horizon and calm shallow water, good for a relaxed evening on the sand even though it faces roughly south. Many Middle Keys visitors also drive to the gulf side or the old Seven Mile Bridge for the open western sky. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed.

When is the best time of year for Keys sunsets?

Winter and spring bring the driest, clearest skies and the most reliable evenings, which is also the busy high season. Summer is hot and humid with afternoon storms that can either ruin or dramatically light the sky. Hurricane season runs through the autumn, so check conditions and confirm any park hours before you go.
