Key West does not really do beach clubs, and Southernmost Beach Cafe is the best argument that it never needed to. It is the oceanfront restaurant and bar of the resort that owns the last block of Duval Street, set at 1405 Duval where the most famous street in the Keys simply stops at the Atlantic. The dining room styles itself somewhere between old Key West and a French Caribbean bistro, the tables spill toward the water, and the sand of South Beach starts where the floorboards end. Anyone can walk in, no room key required, from first coffee at 8am to the last dinner plate at 9pm.

Our take, consistent with the whole Florida Keys club directory, is that the Keys reward eating and drinking by the water more than lounging beside it. Judged that way this is the most complete shoreline venue in Key West: a real kitchen, a beach bar, and the town’s only true walk to the sand from Duval.

The clock matters more here than at any club we cover, because the kitchen changes character three times a day. At 8am the terrace belongs to hotel guests in linen and early risers who walked the length of Duval before the heat, and breakfast until 10:45am is the quietest seat on the island’s Atlantic side. Lunch runs to 4pm and is the scene at its fullest: the beach bar pouring frozen drinks, cruise ship day visitors finding the one patch of Key West sand within walking distance, attendants shuttling towels to the resort loungers. Dinner, 4pm to 9pm, is when the food gets most serious and, in the cooler months, when the sun drops while you are still holding a fork. Then it ends. By the time upper Duval is loud, the cafe is stacking chairs, and that early curfew is the most honest thing about it.

The kitchen earns the detour on its own. The daily fish is the order: whatever the boats brought in, prepared the way you ask, which in the Keys is a quiet flex that most tourist strips cannot back up. Around it sit coconut crusted shrimp with a sharp dipping sauce, a grilled lobster tail dressed simply, and a lunch burger buried under bacon and a fried egg that reviewers on the big platforms consistently rate as fair value for a beachfront address. The room mixes iconic Key West colour with bistro manners, and you can arrive straight off the sand without anyone blinking.

Where it falls short is the club checklist. There is no pool for the public by default, no DJ, no daybed theatre: the sand in front is a small public beach and the reserved comfort on it points at resort guests first. Day entry to the resort’s three heated pools has been sold through ResortPass, but nothing was listed on our last check, so a visitor’s honest expectation is a table, a drink, and a towel on public sand. If your measure of a beach day is bottle service and a bassline, Key West will disappoint you gently, and this cafe is the wrong test.

South Beach is a pocket, not a strand: a short curve of imported sand where Duval Street meets the Atlantic, with water that stays typically calm and shallow behind its groyne. It fills by late morning precisely because it is the beach you can reach on foot from downtown, and it empties again toward evening. Serious swimmers and beach walkers should treat it as a supplement, not the destination. You do not need directions so much as a landmark: walk Duval Street south until it ends, and the cafe is at 1405 Duval with the ocean behind it, a few steps from the Southernmost Point buoy queue. From the cruise piers it is a flat half hour on foot or a short ride on the Duval Loop. Tables book through OpenTable and walk ins work outside peak sunset hours. Chairs on the sand go through the beach attendants, guests first, and any day pass to the resort pools should be confirmed directly since listings come and go with the season.
