Most of what people call a beach club in Islamorada is really a resort waterfront, and Cheeca Lodge and Spa is the grand version of that idea. It spreads across 27 acres on the Atlantic side of the island, with 1,200 feet of its own pale sand, a fishing pier that runs 525 feet into the shallows, and a run of restaurants and tiki bars that do far more of the talking than any sound system. Come here and the day is measured in the catch of the morning, a long lunch over the water and a rum drink as the light drops, not in a set list.

The scene at Cheeca is unhurried by design. The crowd is a mix of families working through Camp Cheeca and the two oceanfront pools, couples on a slow week, and anglers walking out to the end of that long pier at first light. Nobody is here to be seen. The two open air tiki bars are the social centre of the place, the spot where a fishing charter debriefs over a cold beer and where the sunset crowd gathers, and that easy rhythm is the whole point of an Islamorada stay.

For a food and scene wanderer, the kitchens are where Cheeca pulls ahead of the ordinary resort waterfront. Atlantic’s Edge sits right on the ocean and builds its menu around seafood and prime steaks, Nikai turns the same fish into sushi with a proper sake list, and Mia Cucina keeps the families happy with Neapolitan style pizza. Then there is 25 South, the tiki restaurant and bar, for the island plates you actually want with your feet near the sand. Eat your way across those four and you have had the real Cheeca day.

Where it falls short is honesty about the beach itself and about access. Like every shore in the Keys, this sand is narrow and the swimming is gentle rather than dramatic, so the water works best from the pier, a kayak or a boat out to the flats and reef, and conditions here are typical rather than guaranteed. Just as important, this is a stay first resort, so a non guest cannot simply pay at a gate for a lounger, and the surest route in without a room is a booking in one of those restaurants.

Islamorada calls itself the sport fishing capital of the world, and the water off Cheeca explains why, a warm shallow apron of turquoise that gives way to grass flats and reef rather than surf. It is a shore for wading, paddling and casting more than for long swims, which is exactly the Keys character. Cheeca is easy to find, sitting right on the Overseas Highway at roughly mile marker 82 in Islamorada, about an hour and a half south of Miami International and its rental desks. The resort runs valet parking, a shuttle around the clock, and even boat slips for guests who arrive by water, so how you turn up is flexible. Booking, though, is where the honesty matters. Rooms and the oceanfront restaurants go through the resort directly and on OpenTable, and a table is the dependable way onto the property for a non guest, since a walk in beach day is not something Cheeca sells.
