Praia da Galheta is the beach you have to earn, and that is exactly what makes it beautiful. There is no road and no bus stop, only a trail of about twenty minutes over the headland from the northern end of Praia Mole, winding through Atlantic forest and dune with the ocean opening up beneath you. Crest the last rise and the reward is a clean, wild sweep of pale sand backed by green hills, with no buildings, no kiosks and often almost no one about. For a traveller with an eye for light and landscape, it is one of the most photogenic and untouched beaches on the island, a real escape a short walk from the crowds.
The wildness is the whole design. The beach is deliberately left undeveloped to protect its natural state, so there is nothing here but sand, sea and forest, and that emptiness is the point.
