Triopetra Beach
Best for. Couples and slow travellers who want a big open beach, simple tavernas and one of the best sunsets in southern Crete.
Best spot. The wide main sweep below the three rocks, with the rocks framing the sea as the light drops.
Know this. This is an exposed south coast beach, so afternoon wind and waves are common and are part of its character.
Triopetra takes its name from the three rocks that stand out of the sea at the western end, and they are the signature of a beach that feels gloriously unhurried. This is the deep south of Crete, a long way from the airports and the big resorts, and the reward for the drive is a wide reddish gold beach split into a small sheltered bay and a long open run of sand. There is just enough here, a few tavernas and rooms on the slope behind, and not a scrap more.
The beach earns its reputation at the end of the day. With the open southern horizon in front and the three rocks to one side, the sunset light spreads across the whole bay, and the tavernas above fill with people who have timed their evening for it. Through the day the smaller bay is the calmer choice for swimming and families, while the long main beach gives you space to walk and the best view of the rocks. Yoga and wellness groups have long favoured the quiet here, which tells you something about the pace.
The honest caveat is the wind. Triopetra faces straight out to the Libyan Sea, so when the southerly fills in the flat morning water turns choppy and the fine sand can move. None of it spoils the place, but it shapes the day, so swim in the morning, take the afternoon for a long lunch and a walk, and stay for the sunset. Anyone needing a polished resort beach with full service should look to the north coast, but for honest, big sky calm this is hard to beat.
Clubs on this beach
Triopetra is a quiet public beach with simple tavernas rather than a named beach club. Seasonal sunbeds and umbrellas sit in front of some of them, and that is the closest thing to a club here. Names and hours change year to year, so confirm before you travel, and use the Crete beach clubs guide for the wider island picture.
Seasonal taverna sunbeds
Sunbeds and umbrellas in front of the tavernas behind the sand. Operator names and prices to be confirmed.
South coast, Crete
Triopetra lies on the south coast below the village of Akoumia, in the Rethymno region. From Rethymno town it is a drive of around an hour, climbing over the hills and then dropping down a narrow winding road to the sea. There is parking behind the beach near the tavernas at both the small bay and the main stretch.
There is no useful public transport down to the beach itself, so a car is the practical choice. The final descent is steep and the lanes are tight, so take it slowly, and once you arrive the two parts of the beach are a short walk or a quick drive apart.

Common questions about Triopetra
Why is it called Triopetra?
The name means three rocks, after the three tall stones that rise from the sea at the western end of the beach. They are the beach's landmark and frame the view beautifully at sunset, which is when most people photograph them.
Is Triopetra good for swimming?
Yes, especially in the morning and in the smaller sheltered bay, where the water is calmest. The long main beach faces the open sea and can pick up waves and wind in the afternoon, which suits stronger swimmers more than small children. There is no guaranteed lifeguard, so judge conditions yourself.
Are there tavernas and sunbeds at Triopetra?
Yes, a handful of tavernas and rooms sit on the slope behind the sand, and some put out seasonal sunbeds and umbrellas. It is simple rather than developed, and names, prices and opening times change from year to year, so confirm before you visit.
Is Triopetra worth the drive?
If you like big, quiet beaches and a slow pace, very much so. It is far from the main resorts, the sunset is among the best in southern Crete, and the open sand gives a real sense of space. If you want full facilities and easy access, a north coast beach will suit you better.
When is the best time to visit Triopetra?
Late May, June or September for warm water and long evenings without the deepest summer crowds. Within the day, swim in the calmer morning, take a long lunch, then stay for the sunset behind the three rocks, which is the beach at its finest.
