Agios Pavlos Beach
Best for. Travellers who want a calm swim in a sheltered cove and a short scramble to dramatic dunes and open surf.
Best spot. The main bay for easy swimming, then the climb over the headland to the dunes and the wilder second beach.
Know this. The sheltered bay is calm, but the dunes beach behind faces the open sea and is often windy with real waves.
Agios Pavlos is two beaches in one small place. The first is the tidy main bay, a sheltered curve of soft sand below a cluster of tavernas and rooms, where the water is usually calm and the swimming is easy. It is the kind of cove where you can settle in for a slow day, swim out to the cool blue and order lunch a few steps from your towel. For many people that quiet bay is reason enough to come.
The second beach is the reason photographers make the trip. Climb over the rocky headland at the western end, a short scramble of a few minutes, and you drop into a wilder cove backed by tall sand dunes that pour down the slope to the shore. The dunes are striking, sculpted by the south wind, and the sea here is open and far livelier, which makes it a favourite of surfers and bodyboarders. Sunset from the top of the dunes, looking out over the Libyan Sea, is the image people carry home.
The honest reading is that the two sides ask for different days. The main bay is gentle and good for a relaxed swim and a long lunch, while the dunes beach is exposed and often windy, beautiful but not the place for small children when the surf is up. Treat the dunes as a scenic walk and a swim for confident swimmers, keep the calm bay for the easy hours, and you get the best of both. Like its neighbour Triopetra, this is the slow, far south of Crete, so come for space and scenery rather than full resort comfort.
Clubs on this beach
Agios Pavlos is a small public beach with a few tavernas rather than a named beach club. Seasonal sunbeds and umbrellas sit in front of them in the main bay, and that is the nearest thing to a club here. Names and hours change year to year, so confirm before you travel, and use the Crete beach clubs guide for the wider island.
Seasonal taverna sunbeds
Sunbeds and umbrellas in front of the tavernas in the main bay. Operator names and prices to be confirmed.
South coast, Crete
Agios Pavlos sits on the south coast below Akoumia in the Rethymno region, just west of Triopetra. From Rethymno town the drive is around an hour, over the hills and down a narrow road to the small bay, with parking above the beach near the tavernas. The dunes beach is reached on foot from there.
There is no practical bus to the beach, so a car is the sensible way in, and the final descent is steep and winding. Once you have parked, the main bay is right below you and the dunes cove is a short walk over the headland to the west.

Common questions about Agios Pavlos
What are the Agios Pavlos sand dunes?
They are tall, wind sculpted dunes that spill down to a wild cove just west of the main bay, reached by a short scramble over the headland. They are the area's most photographed feature, especially at sunset, and they are fragile, so it is important not to climb on or dig into them.
Is Agios Pavlos good for swimming?
The main bay is sheltered and usually calm, which makes it good for an easy swim and for families. The dunes beach behind faces the open sea and is often windy with real waves, better for surfers and confident swimmers. There is no guaranteed lifeguard, so judge conditions for yourself.
Are there tavernas at Agios Pavlos?
Yes, a small cluster of tavernas and rooms sits above the main bay, and some put out seasonal sunbeds and umbrellas. It is a low key place rather than a resort, and names, prices and opening times vary year to year, so confirm before you go.
Is Agios Pavlos good for surfing?
The exposed dunes beach can offer waves when the south wind blows, and it draws surfers and bodyboarders on the right day. Conditions are not reliable and there is no supervision, so it suits experienced wave riders who can read the sea rather than complete beginners.
How does Agios Pavlos compare with Triopetra?
They are close neighbours and share the quiet far south feel. Agios Pavlos is smaller, with a sheltered main bay and the dramatic dunes, while Triopetra is a longer open beach with its three sea rocks. Many people visit both in a day, swimming at one and watching the sunset at the other.
