Falassarna Beach
Best for. Sunset chasers and anyone who likes room to spread out, since the sand is broad enough to swallow a crowd.
Best spot. The main organised stretch for sunbeds and a sundowner, with the open western horizon straight ahead for the colour.
Know this. Falassarna faces the open sea, so wind and waves are common and are part of why surfers and kite riders love it.
Falassarna is the big, generous beach on the western edge of Crete, a long run of pale gold sand backed by tomato fields and low hills. It is the kind of place that does not need a gimmick. The sand is wide, the water is clean, and because the bay opens straight onto the western horizon it serves up the best sunsets on the island most evenings of the season. People drive over from Chania just for that last hour, and they are right to.
Through the day Falassarna splits into moods. The organised sections have sunbeds, umbrellas and beach bars, and these fill first because they are easy. Walk a few minutes in either direction and the beach opens out into quiet, undeveloped sand where you can lay a towel with space around you. That mix is the beauty of the place. You can have service and a cold drink, or solitude, depending on how far you are willing to walk.
The honest note is the wind. This is an exposed west coast beach, and when the meltemi or a sea breeze fills in, the flat morning water turns to rolling surf. Swimmers may find it choppy, while surfers, bodyboarders and kite riders are delighted. None of it is dangerous in ordinary conditions, but it changes the day, so check the forecast, take the mornings for calm swimming, and save the windier afternoons for the sand and the sunset.
Clubs on this beach
Falassarna is a public beach with organised sections rather than a single named club. Seasonal beach bars and sunbed concessions run parts of the sand, and they are the closest thing to a club here. Names and opening hours change year to year, so confirm before you travel, and use the Crete beach clubs guide for the wider picture.
Seasonal beach bar and sunbeds
Sunbeds, umbrellas and a beach bar on the organised stretch. Operator names and prices to be confirmed.
West coast, Crete
Falassarna lies on the far west coast of Crete, reached on the road over the hill from Platanos northwest of Kissamos. From Chania it is a drive of around an hour and a quarter, the final descent opening onto the wide bay and its fields. There is parking behind several points along the sand.
There is no useful public transport to the beach itself outside limited summer services, so a car is the practical choice. Once you arrive, the organised sections, the open sand and the ancient site to the north are all within an easy distance of the parking areas.

Common questions about Falassarna
Does Falassarna really have the best sunsets in Crete?
It has a strong claim. The beach faces the open western horizon with nothing in the way, so on clear evenings the whole bay turns gold and then deep orange. People drive from Chania specifically for it, and in summer it is worth arriving early to claim a spot.
Is Falassarna windy?
Often, yes. It is an exposed west coast beach, so a sea breeze or the meltemi can raise waves, especially in the afternoon. Surfers and kite riders love it. Swimmers who prefer calm water should aim for the mornings, when the sea is usually flattest.
Are there sunbeds and bars at Falassarna?
Yes, in the organised sections, where seasonal beach bars and sunbed concessions operate. Walk a few minutes from these and the beach becomes quiet open sand. Operator names and hours change year to year and are best confirmed before you visit.
Is Falassarna good for families?
It can be, particularly on calm mornings when the shallows are gentle. On windy afternoons the waves suit older children and surfers more than toddlers. The broad sand gives families plenty of room, and the organised sections offer shade and refreshments.
When is the best time to visit Falassarna?
Late May or September for warm water and long evenings without the deepest summer crowds. Within the day, mornings for calm swimming and the final hour for the sunset, which is the beach at its best.
