Burriana is the largest and liveliest beach in Nerja, the pretty cliff town that marks the eastern end of the Costa del Sol in the Axarquia. While the famous Balcon de Europa lookout sits above small coves in the centre of town, Burriana is the real beach day, a wide golden arc that gathers the watersports, the chiringuitos and most of the summer energy in one place.
The water here is calmer and clearer than much of the coast to the west, which makes Burriana a fine spot for swimming, snorkelling, kayaking and paddleboarding. The chiringuitos are a serious draw in their own right, and Burriana is closely tied to the local tradition of paella cooked over open fire on the sand. Come hungry and make a long lunch of it.
It suits families and active visitors who want a big, sociable beach with everything from sunbeds to sea kayaks to fresh paella within reach. The honest caveat is that Burriana is the busy heart of Nerja in summer, so anyone after a quiet cove should walk to the smaller beaches or head east to Maro. For a full, lively beach day with great food and clear water, though, Burriana is the pick of Nerja. May, June and September are the sweet spots, and mornings are calmest in peak season.
Nerja is about characterful chiringuitos and watersports rather than glossy beach clubs. Compare the food and sunbed options in our Costa del Sol beach clubs directory.

Parking is in car parks and streets above the beach, busy in high summer, so arrive earlier on weekends. Bring sun cream and a hat, and decide whether you want a free patch of public sand or a hired sunbed at one of the chiringuitos.
