The verdict

  • Best for: Families and value seekers who want soft free sand and a proper promenade in smart Javea, and are happy to arrive early to dodge the parking squeeze.
  • Best spot: The central bay for sand and facilities, with the quieter southern end toward the rocks better for a calmer towel space.
  • Know this: Entry is free, but Javea is pricier than Benidorm and parking fills fast. Come early, bring your own shade, and eat back from the front.

The honest read

The Arenal is Javea's sandy beach, the one soft golden bay on a coast that is otherwise pebble, gravel and rock coves, which is exactly why it draws the crowds. It is a genuinely pleasant beach, the water calm and clear, the sand clean, and the promenade behind it strung with cafes, restaurants and shops that give it an easy evening buzz. For families who want sand under their feet rather than shingle, this is the obvious choice in Javea, and the beach itself costs nothing.

Javea is a smarter, more residential resort than the package towns down the coast, and prices reflect that. The promenade restaurants are pleasant but not cheap, and the single biggest cost of a day here is not the sand but the parking, which fills early and fast through July and August. The value plan is simple. Arrive before mid morning or in the late afternoon, park a few streets back and walk in rather than circling for a front space, bring your own parasol and water, and treat the promenade as a place for one drink rather than the whole budget.

It suits families, couples and anyone who wants a calm, good looking town beach with full facilities. The honest caveat is that the Arenal is busy and built up in peak season, and the clear water that Javea is famous for is better experienced in the rocky coves nearby. If you have come for snorkelling and seclusion rather than sand, the cove at Granadella to the south is the better trip. For an easy, free, family friendly sandy day, though, the Arenal earns its popularity.

Getting there and essentials

The Arenal sits on the bay below Javea, around half an hour from Benidorm and roughly an hour and a quarter from Alicante airport by car. There is no train to Javea, so most visitors drive, and the car parks and street spaces around the bay fill fast in summer.

The value move is to arrive before mid morning or after the afternoon turnover, park a few streets back and walk in, and bring sun cream, water and your own parasol. Buses link Javea with the surrounding towns, and the old town up the hill is worth a wander for cheaper, more local food.

Before you go

Common questions

Is Playa del Arenal free?

Yes. The beach is free public sand. You pay only for a hired sunbed and parasol or for food and drink along the promenade. The real cost at the Arenal is parking in high summer, so arrive early or walk in from further back.

Is Arenal the only sandy beach in Javea?

Yes. The Arenal is the main sandy beach in Javea, which is why it is so popular. Most of the rest of the Javea coast is pebble, gravel or rock coves, so families who want soft sand head here while snorkellers prefer the clear water coves nearby.

Where do you park at Playa del Arenal?

There are car parks and street parking around the bay, but they fill fast on summer days. The value move is to arrive before mid morning or after the afternoon turnover, or to park a few streets back and walk in rather than circling for a front space.

Is Playa del Arenal good for families?

Yes. The sand is soft, the water is typically calm and shallow near the shore, and there are seasonal lifeguards, showers and a long promenade of cafes and shops. It is busy in peak summer, so keep an eye on children. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed.

When is the best time to visit Playa del Arenal?

May, June, September and October give warm, calm water, easier parking and lower prices than the August peak. Mornings are calmest and coolest for parking in high summer, and the promenade is liveliest in the evening.
