Tamaricciu

Tamaricciu takes its name from the tamarisk trees that shade this southern corner of Palombaggia, and the venue has stayed true to the paillote idea those trees suggest: an open air timber terrace, a serious grill, and lounger rows running down to some of the clearest shallow water on the island. It is listed under U Tamaricciu in the Corsican style, answers a French phone number, and has become the fixture that visiting food writers and returning families mention in the same breath.

Our position on the Corsica club directory is that this island does paillotes rather than velvet rope clubs, and Tamaricciu is the reference for the breed. You do not come here to be seen. You come because somebody told you about the lobster, and because the sand it sits on would justify the drive even if the kitchen were ordinary, which it is not.

Start with the plates, because that is what separates Tamaricciu from every other lounger operation on this coast. The menu leans hard on the local catch, and the dishes that come up again and again in visitor accounts are the fresh crab, the lobster and the swordfish, backed by grilled fish, pasta and pizzas for the table that cannot agree. This is a kitchen that Corsican booking guides describe as a quality table first and a beach setup second, which is exactly the right order.

The rhythm of the day rewards timing. Morning is loungers, coffee and near silence apart from the water. Lunch is the main event, a two hour affair at full occupancy in summer, and the mid afternoon that follows is the calmest window on the beds as the dining room empties back onto the sand. Toward evening the bar takes over, mixing creative cocktails served with tapas as the light goes gold over the bay, and independent listings flag night events in high summer. But note the published hours end at 7, so check what is actually on before you plan a late one around it.

Where does it fall short? Transparency, mostly. Nothing about bed rates or minimum spend is published anywhere official, which makes the August value question impossible to answer before you arrive, and this end of Palombaggia gets properly busy in peak weeks, when the road in and the parking demand an early start. If your priority is a louder, later scene, Corsica is honestly the wrong island for it, and the calmer glamour of Le Palm Beach up the same sand makes a better comparison than anything on the mainland.

Palombaggia is the postcard Corsica mails to the rest of the world, a long curve of pale sand broken by wind smoothed red rocks, with umbrella pines behind and water that stays shallow and typically calm a long way out. The southern end around Tamaricciu is quieter than the central stretch, and the free sand beside the lounger rows means a rental bed is a choice rather than an entry ticket. The venue sits on the Route de Palombaggia, the coastal loop a short drive south of Porto Vecchio, and in summer that road is the bottleneck, so leave earlier than feels necessary and expect the nearby parking to fill by late morning in peak weeks. On site the practical boxes are ticked, showers, toilets, card payment and a watched stretch of water in season, and dogs are not welcome on the beds.
