Da Mare by Sea Lounge

Palombaggia already had the postcard covered, white sand, red rocks, umbrella pines, before anyone thought to serve ceviche on it. Da Mare by Sea Lounge is the venue that made that leap, roughly 1,500 square metres of loungers, dining terrace and cocktail bar arranged under the pines on the route de Palombaggia shoreline at Porto Vecchio. The name is a double act by design: Sea Lounge is the beach operation, all lounge beds, deckchairs and attendants circulating from ten in the morning, while Da Mare is the restaurant threaded through it, where the raw bar does the talking.

It is the most deliberately styled operation on the beach, and unlike its neighbours it keeps going after the sand empties, with dinner running to midnight and a bar programme that treats sunset as the main event of the day rather than the end of it.

The kitchen is the reason to choose this stretch of sand over the next one. Stephanie Ruelle cooks in sharing format, tradition pushed through a modern press, and the tartare and ceviche bar is the house signature. A recent carte opened with a houmous, tzatziki and guacamole trilogy and a skate spring roll, moved through gambas risotto, gnocchi in cedrat cream with dried mountain meat and spaghetti with clams and mussels, and let the day’s arrivals decide the fish, loup, daurade or the flat Saint Pierre. The sleeper hit is the fried plate: smelt, calamari and urtigai, the battered anemones almost nobody outside Corsica has tasted, which alone justify ordering beyond your comfort zone.

The scene runs on a clock worth learning. Before noon it is coffee, swimmers and the calmest hour on the beds. Through the afternoon the attendants keep the loungers fed and watered, and at four the beach is still families and long lunches. The turn comes at golden hour, when the cocktail bar picks up and resident DJs play the sun down over the bay. In August the dial goes further, a clubbing programme with invited guest names that the club promotes each summer, and dinner holds until midnight all season. The same address serves two different evenings depending on the month, which is either the pitch or the warning.

The gaps are informational and seasonal. Nothing about beds or minimums is printed by the club itself, so the directory figures above are the best available and peak Saturdays will test them. Shade is real but finite, a line of parasol pines rather than a canopy. And Palombaggia in August is an arrival problem everywhere, the car park fills, the road crawls, and the front row goes to whoever phoned first. June and September buy the same menu with half the elbows.

Step off the last lounger and the beach keeps giving: shallow turquoise over pale sand, red granite outcrops that frame every photo taken here, and the Cerbicale islands floating on the horizon. Walk south and the crowd thins toward the Tamaricciu end, walk north and coves open between the rocks. From Porto Vecchio the route de Palombaggia winds south for around 20 minutes, and the club sits on the shoreline road with parking listed among its services, a real advantage on a beach where summer parking is a contact sport. The bathing area in front is supervised in season per its listing, and access for reduced mobility is flagged too, which few venues on this coast can say.
