The verdict

Best for. Couples who want space, dunes and the finest sunset on Corfu, and who would trade a sheltered cove for a long empty shore to walk at dusk.

Best spot. Walk south along the sand toward the lagoon mouth for the wildest stretch, then settle on the dunes for the light as the sun drops into the sea.

Know this. Issos is open and exposed, so the afternoon wind that draws the kitesurfers can stir the sea. Swim early and bring your own shade.

The honest read

Issos is the beach you come to when you want the opposite of a tidy cove. It is a vast open sweep of golden sand on the southwest coast, backed by tall cedar dunes and the still water of the Korission Lagoon behind, and it faces straight into the sunset. There is almost nothing built here, which is the whole point. For a couple it offers something the pretty north coast bays cannot, the rare luxury of space, a shore so long that even in August you can walk until you have it to yourselves and a sky that turns gold over the water at the end of the day.

The honest part is the wind. The same exposure that makes Issos one of the best kitesurfing and windsurfing beaches on the island means the afternoon breeze can pick up and ruffle the sea, so this is not the place for a glassy lunchtime float. Read it the right way and that is no loss. The mornings are usually calmer for a swim, the shallow sandy entry is gentle and warm, and a breezy afternoon simply becomes a day for a long barefoot walk by the dunes and the lagoon rather than a lie down by flat water. If you want a sheltered swim instead, the clear coves around Kassiopi on the northeast coast are the calmer choice.

So treat Issos as a sunset beach and a walking beach for two. Arrive with your own umbrella, water and a picnic, swim while the morning sea is calm, wander the dunes and the lagoon edge in the warm part of the day, and stay for the light. The sunset here is among the finest on Corfu, and watching it from the dunes with the shore emptying around you is as romantic as the island gets. It asks a little effort and gives back room, quiet and one very good evening.

Getting there and essentials

Southwest coast, Corfu

Issos sits on the southwest coast near Halikounas and the Korission Lagoon, around forty five minutes from Corfu Town by car. A track leads to informal parking by the dunes, and a short walk over the sand brings you to the open shore.

A car gives you the freedom to pair Issos with the lagoon walk and the long beach at neighbouring Halikounas on the same day. Public transport is limited on this corner, so driving is by far the easier option.

Common questions about Issos

Is Issos good for couples?

Yes, in a wild rather than a cosy way. Issos is a vast open sweep of sand and cedar dunes on the southwest coast, facing the sunset, so it suits a couple who want space and a long evening walk over a sheltered cove and a fancy lounger. Come for the late light and the emptiness rather than calm water, because the wind that draws the kitesurfers also stirs the sea on a breezy day.

Is Issos a sandy beach?

Yes, it is one of the largest stretches of true sand on Corfu, a wide golden shore backed by tall cedar dunes beside the Korission Lagoon. The entry is shallow and gradual, which makes the shallows pleasant, though there is little natural shade once you leave the dunes. Bring an umbrella and water.

Is Issos windy?

Often, yes. The same exposure that makes Issos a favourite for kitesurfing and windsurfing means the afternoon breeze can pick up and ruffle the sea. For the calmest swim come in the morning before the wind builds, and treat a windy afternoon as a day for a walk and a sunset rather than a flat swim.

How do you get to Issos beach?

Issos sits on the southwest coast near Halikounas and the Korission Lagoon, around forty five minutes by car from Corfu Town. A track leads to informal parking by the dunes, and a short walk over the sand brings you to the open shore. A car is by far the easiest way to reach it.

When is the best time to visit Issos?

Late May, June and September for warm water, lighter wind in the mornings and a beach that never feels crowded even in summer. The best couples plan is an early swim, a long walk by the dunes and the lagoon, and a stay for the sunset, which is among the finest on Corfu.
