The verdict

  • Best for: Families and value minded travellers who want soft golden sand and clear water, with the choice of a free public stretch or a serviced lounger at a club.
  • Best spot: The free public section for a cheap day on the same golden sand, or a club lounger if you want shade and service, with an early morning arrival for room and parking.
  • Know this: Altinkum is small and very popular, so it fills fast at weekends and in peak summer. Come early, and remember the free sand gives you the same sea as the paid clubs.

Sand
Golden fine sand
Altinkum takes its name from its golden sand, a short stretch of fine, pale, soft grains that is gentle for children and easy to lay a towel on. It is one of the prettier sand beaches close to Cesme town.
Water
Clear, cool, turquoise
The water is clean and a clear turquoise, and because the bay faces the open sea it can feel a touch cooler than the warm thermal beaches at Ilica. It shelves gently and suits paddling and easy swimming. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
Entry
Free and paid
There is a free public section with sunbeds, umbrellas, showers and changing cabins, alongside beach clubs that charge for loungers and have a minimum spend. So you can spend almost nothing or pay for comfort, with club charges to be confirmed.
Facilities
Good, cafes and clubs
The beach has cafes, restaurants and beach clubs along the sand, plus toilets and showers at the public stretch, so a day here is easy. The free section has the basics and the clubs add full service for a fee.
Lifeguard
Seasonal, not guaranteed
Lifeguard cover is seasonal and not guaranteed. The gentle shelving water suits families, but the open aspect can bring a breeze and small waves in the afternoon, so supervise children and favour the calmer mornings. Conditions are typical and never guaranteed.
Best months
May to October
The warm season runs from late spring into autumn. June and September are the sweet spot for value and space, with warm water and far fewer people than the packed weekends of July and August.
The honest read

Altinkum is the easy golden sand beach a short drive south of Cesme town, and for a value minded traveller it is one of the smartest choices on the peninsula. The sand is genuinely lovely, the water is clear, and crucially there is a free public stretch with sunbeds, showers and changing cabins, so a family can have a proper beach day without paying a club a single lira beyond lunch.

The honest catch is size. Altinkum is a short bay, only a few hundred metres of sand, so it gets busy quickly, and on a July or August weekend the free section and the car park both fill by mid morning. The fix is simple and free: arrive early, claim your patch, and you get the best of the beach before the crowd. Turn up at midday in peak season and you will spend the day shuffling for space.

On the choice between free sand and a paid club, our view is clear. The clubs are pleasant and add shade, service and music, but the sea they sit on is the same turquoise water you reach from the free stretch a few steps away. Pay for the comfort if you want it, not for the view, and if you are counting the cost of the day, the public beach is the better deal and just as pretty.

The club layer

Clubs on this beach

Altinkum mixes a free public beach with a handful of beach clubs along the sand. We describe the serviced options honestly and route enquiries through our directory, never inventing fees or amenities.

Altinkum beach clubs and the free public beach

Along the Altinkum sand, beach clubs hire loungers and umbrellas and run cafes beside the free public stretch, the comfortable serviced option next to a genuinely free family beach. Verdict: pay for shade and service if you want it, but the free sand gives you the same clear water, with club charges and any minimum spend to be confirmed.

Getting there and essentials

Altinkum is a short drive south of Cesme town, about ten minutes by car or taxi, and the summer dolmus minibus runs there too, which keeps the cost of getting there low. Parking near the seafront fills early on busy days, so the same advice applies to the car as to the sand: come in the morning. It is roughly an hour and a quarter from Izmir Adnan Menderes airport by the fast road.

Bring sun cover, water and a little cash for loungers, parking and the dolmus, and decide before you go whether you want the free public stretch or a club, because that choice sets the cost of your day. The water is clearest and calmest in the morning, the afternoon can bring a breeze off the open sea, and shade is worth seeking out in the strong Aegean sun.

Common questions

Is Altinkum beach in Cesme free?

Partly. Altinkum has a free public section with sunbeds, umbrellas, showers and changing cabins, alongside beach clubs that charge for loungers and carry a minimum spend. So you can have a free day on the public sand or a serviced day at a club, with club charges to be confirmed.

Is Altinkum beach good for families?

Yes. The golden sand is soft, the water is clear and shelves gently, and there are toilets, showers and cafes close by, which makes it an easy family beach. It is small and busy though, lifeguard cover is seasonal and not guaranteed, and the afternoon can bring a breeze, so come early and supervise children.

Why is the water at Altinkum cooler than Ilica?

Altinkum faces the open sea rather than sitting over the thermal springs that warm the bay at Ilica, so the water here feels clear and refreshing rather than bath warm. Many people prefer it on a hot day, but if you want the warmest, shallowest water in Cesme, Ilica is the better pick.

When is the best time to visit Altinkum beach?

Come early in the day and, if you can, travel in June or September rather than peak July and August. The beach is short and very popular, so weekends and high summer fill the free sand and the car park by mid morning, while the shoulder months give you warm water, more room and better value.

How do you get to Altinkum beach in Cesme?

Altinkum is about ten minutes south of Cesme town by car or taxi, with the summer dolmus minibus as a cheap alternative, and parking near the seafront that fills early on busy days. It is roughly an hour and a quarter from Izmir airport by the fast road.
