Milnerton is the beach you come to for the view, not the swim. It runs along the northern shore of Table Bay, on the opposite side of the water from the city, and from here Table Mountain rises across the bay in its full breadth, with the city at its feet and Robben Island out to sea. Photographers know this stretch well, because no other Cape Town beach frames the mountain quite like it, especially as the light turns gold in the evening.
It is a long, flat, open beach made for walking. At low tide the sand is wide and firm, dog walkers spread out along it, and the small Milnerton lighthouse on Woodbridge Island gives the view a foreground and a destination. A lagoon and river mouth break the beach near the lighthouse, and the whole stretch has an unpolished, local feel, more weekend dog walk than postcard resort.
The honest part is the wind and the water. This is exposed Table Bay, one of the windier corners of a windy city, and the cold Atlantic carries strong currents, so swimming is not the point and lifeguard cover is thin. The same wind that chops the water makes this kitesurfing country further north toward Bloubergstrand. Come to Milnerton for the long walk, the dog, the lighthouse and above all that view of the mountain across the bay, and pick a calmer late summer day to enjoy it at its best.
Milnerton is a walking and view beach with no club on the sand. The mountain view draws cafes and restaurants along the Table Bay shore and up toward Bloubergstrand, set back from the beach rather than on it.
A scatter of cafes and restaurants along the Table Bay shore and north toward Bloubergstrand trade on the mountain view across the water, a fine spot for a meal at sunset. They sit back from the sand, and specific venues and hours are to be confirmed.
There is no sunbed and bottle service beach club on Milnerton itself; it is a public walking beach. For the mountain view with a drink, the shore cafes nearby are the move. Details are to be confirmed.
Milnerton lies on the northern shore of Table Bay, about fifteen to twenty minutes by car from the city centre along the coast, on the way toward Bloubergstrand and the West Coast. The beach runs north from the river mouth and the lighthouse on Woodbridge Island, with parking near both.
Bring a wind layer whatever the season, as this is one of the breezier corners of the city, and time your visit for a calmer day if you want the clearest mountain view. Facilities on the beach are limited, so use the cafes set back along the shore, keep dogs under control where required, and treat the cold Atlantic water with caution, as currents and conditions are never guaranteed.
Milnerton is a view and walking beach with no club, but tell us your date and party and we will point you to club style beds and bars on the Cape. No charge to enquire.
For the view. It runs along the northern shore of Table Bay, directly opposite the city, so Table Mountain rises across the water in its full breadth with Robben Island beyond. It is one of the best places anywhere to photograph the mountain, especially at sunset.
It is exposed Table Bay with cold Atlantic water, strong currents and frequent wind, and lifeguard cover is limited, so it is not a casual swimming beach. Most people walk here rather than swim. Respect the currents, as conditions are never guaranteed.
Yes, much of the long open sand is popular with dog walkers, which gives the beach its relaxed local feel. Keep dogs under control and check any signage for seasonal rules, and clean up after them to keep the beach welcoming.
It is about fifteen to twenty minutes by car from the city centre along the coast toward Bloubergstrand, with parking near the river mouth and the lighthouse on Woodbridge Island. A car is the easiest way to reach the open stretch of sand.
Calmer late summer days in February and March give the clearest views of Table Mountain and the most comfortable walks, since this is a windy corner of the city. Sunset is the classic time for the mountain view across the bay.
