The verdict

Best for. Couples who want a polished resort beach with soft golden sand, a palm lined promenade for an evening stroll and plenty of places to eat late by the sea.

Best spot. Take a sunbed on the main beach by day, then keep the quiet Baia dell Ippocampo for a calmer swim and walk the lungomare at dusk before dinner.

Know this. Soverato is social and lively rather than secluded, so for a wild, private cove drive a little north to Copanello and Pietragrande instead.

The honest read

Soverato calls itself the pearl of the Ionian, and the nickname is earned in daylight. The main beach is a broad arc of fine pale gold sand that runs for roughly three kilometres along the front of the town, soft underfoot and shelving gently into clear blue water that has carried the Blue Flag for many seasons. Behind it runs a smart lungomare lined with palms, gardens and oleanders, with a steady supply of bars, gelaterie and restaurants. It is one of the best kept and best equipped resorts on this coast, and it knows it.

For a couple, the pleasure of Soverato is the evening rather than the busy middle of the day. The promenade is made for a slow walk before dinner, the light off the Ionian softens late, and there is no shortage of tables by the sea. By day the central beach is social and full, families and groups packed along the lidos, music drifting from the bars. That is its character, and if you came for a lively, easy resort with everything to hand, it delivers exactly that. The trick is to choose your hour and your stretch of sand.

The honest read is that Soverato is not the place for seclusion or a wild swim. If you want a calmer, prettier corner, the small Baia dell Ippocampo, or Seahorse Bay, a short way from the centre, is the loveliest part of the shore. And if you want the clear, secret coves of this coast, drive a little north to Copanello and Pietragrande, where the water turns properly turquoise between the cliffs. Come to Soverato for the golden sand, the long promenade and the easy evening, and keep the wild swimming for the rocks up the coast.

The club layer

Clubs on this beach

Soverato runs on a long line of seasonal lidos along the main beach, with free sand in between. We name only what we can verify, so specific operators here are to be confirmed.

A row of well kept seasonal lidos rents sunbeds, umbrellas and service along the front, and the resort is among the best equipped on the Ionian coast, but we hold back from naming a club we cannot confirm. For the verified picture of this coast, see the Calabria beach clubs guide.

Getting there and essentials

Ionian coast, Calabria

Soverato sits on the Ionian coast in the province of Catanzaro, on the inner curve of the toe of Italy. The nearest airport is Lamezia Terme, around an hour away across the peninsula by car, and the town has its own station on the Ionian railway line.

The beach and the lungomare are an easy walk from the centre, with parking along the front that fills fast in high summer. Bring water and sun cover for a long day on the open sand, and treat the sea as unsupervised, reading the conditions before you swim.

Common questions about Soverato Beach

Is Soverato good for couples?

It can be, if you treat it as a lively resort rather than a hideaway. The long golden beach and the palm lined lungomare are made for an evening stroll and a late dinner, but the central sand is busy and social. For a quieter, more romantic swim, head to the small Baia dell Ippocampo just outside the centre.

Why is Soverato called the pearl of the Ionian?

Soverato has carried the nickname for its fine pale sand, clear blue water and its smart, well kept seafront, which set it apart on the Ionian coast of Calabria. The main beach runs for around three kilometres and has held Blue Flag status for many seasons. It is one of the best equipped resorts in the region.

What is the sand like at Soverato?

The main beach is fine, pale gold sand that shelves gently into clear water, comfortable underfoot and easy for a long stay on a sunbed. The shore runs in a broad arc along the front of the town. It is softer and more open than the pebble coves elsewhere in Calabria.

Where is the quietest beach near Soverato?

The small Baia dell Ippocampo, or Seahorse Bay, a short way from the centre, is the prettiest and calmer corner of the Soverato shore. The clearer, wilder swimming of this coast lies a little north toward Copanello and Pietragrande. For real seclusion, drive to those rocky coves rather than stay on the town beach.

When is the best time to visit Soverato?

June and September give a warm Ionian sea and long evenings without the dense August crowds that fill the lidos and the lungomare. The resort is at its loudest in peak summer. Treat the sea as unsupervised and read the day before swimming.
