Praia a Mare Beach
Best for. Couples who want a slow Italian seaside town with a famous island on the horizon, an evening boat to a blue sea cave and a long pink dusk over the water.
Best spot. Take the late boat to the Grotta Azzurra on Isola di Dino, then walk back along the quieter sand near Fiuzzi as the sun drops behind the island.
Know this. The sand is dark and the central beach is a busy family resort in August, so the romance is in the island, the boat and the shoulder season rather than the midday town beach.
Praia a Mare is a beach with a view it cannot lose. The whole long seafront looks out at Isola di Dino, the green island that rises a short way offshore, and that island is the reason to come. The town behind the sand is an easygoing Italian resort rather than a postcard village, the beach is dark grey sand and pebble rather than white powder, and in August it fills with families and lidos. None of that is the point. The point is the water between the shore and the island, and the slow boat that crosses it.
For a couple, the way to fall for Praia a Mare is to ignore the busy middle of the day and plan around the island. Take one of the small boats or excursions that leave from the seafront and from Fiuzzi, the stretch closest to Dino, and circle the island to its sea caves. The Grotta Azzurra is the famous one, named for the deep blue the water turns inside when the light is right, and people compare it to the cave at Capri. Go in calm, bright weather, and take the later trip when the boats thin out, so the cave and the cove feel like yours rather than a queue.
The honest read is that the central town beach is pleasant but ordinary, and the dark sand holds the heat, so midday on the busy sand is not where the magic is. Walk south toward Fiuzzi for more room and the best angle on the island, and stay for the dusk, when the sun drops behind Dino and the whole bay goes soft and pink. If you want the polished white sand and clifftop villages of Calabria, that is Tropea and the Costa degli Dei further south. Come to Praia a Mare for the island, the cave and a quiet evening with the water turning colour in front of you.
Clubs on this beach
Praia a Mare runs on seasonal lidos along the seafront rather than a single famous club, with free sand in between. We name only what we can verify, so specific operators here are to be confirmed.
Seasonal lidos rent sunbeds and umbrellas along the main beach and toward Fiuzzi, and the boat operators for Isola di Dino work the same stretch, but we hold back from naming a club we cannot confirm. For the verified picture of this coast, see the Calabria beach clubs guide.
Riviera dei Cedri, Calabria
Praia a Mare sits at the northern end of Calabria on the Riviera dei Cedri, the citron coast, on the Tyrrhenian side near the border with Basilicata. It has its own station on the coastal railway, and the nearest larger airports are Lamezia Terme to the south and Naples well to the north, both a long drive away.
The seafront and the beach are an easy walk from the centre, and the boats to Isola di Dino leave from the shore through the warm months in calm weather. Park early in high summer, bring water and something for your feet on the dark sand, and check boat times locally as they are to be confirmed.

Common questions about Praia a Mare Beach
Is Praia a Mare good for couples?
Yes, in a quiet, unshowy way. The romance here is the island on the horizon, the slow boat to the Grotta Azzurra and the long pink dusk over Isola di Dino. The town beach itself is busy in August, so come in June or September and take the last boat of the day to see the cave at its bluest.
What is the sand like at Praia a Mare?
It is dark, fine sand mixed with small grey pebbles, not the white powder of the Tyrrhenian coast further south. The colour means the beach can feel hot underfoot at midday, so bring something for your feet. The water off the beach is clean and shallow at the edge.
How do you visit the Grotta Azzurra and Isola di Dino?
Small boats and excursions leave through the day from the seafront and from Fiuzzi beach, the closest point to the island. The trip circles Isola di Dino and calls at its sea caves, the Grotta Azzurra being the most famous for its deep blue light. Go in calm, bright conditions for the best colour, and times are to be confirmed locally.
Is Praia a Mare crowded?
In August it is a busy Italian seaside town and the central beach fills with families and lidos. Out of high summer it is calm and unhurried, especially in the early morning and the hour before sunset. For more space, walk south toward Fiuzzi and the quieter sand near the island.
When is the best time to visit Praia a Mare?
June and September give a warm sea, long light and far fewer people than the August peak. The boats to Isola di Dino run through the warm months in calm weather. Treat the sea as unsupervised and read the day before swimming.
