Beach Club

The name reads like a promise, and on this shore the geography can keep it. Sunset Beach Club sits on the long sand below the old town of Tropea, at the Via Lungomare end of the most photographed coastline in Calabria, facing west over the Tyrrhenian where the silhouette of Stromboli smokes on the horizon on a clear evening. Umbrellas go up at eight in the morning, the kitchen runs from wood fired pizza to sushi, and the bar understands exactly what the golden hour is for.

We rank it second in our Calabria club directory, behind Lido Charly, and the two divide the Tropea strand neatly between them. Charly is the stilt house lunch institution with the fish counter; Sunset is the looser, cheaper day that drifts from a morning swim toward a spritz as the light turns amber. For two people with no plans past dinner, this is the one we would book, with a single caveat about the clock that we explain below.

Ask people who have spent a day here what they liked and the same notes repeat: the umbrella rows leave real space between neighbours, the beds are comfortable, the staff are easy, and the music arrives with the evening rather than at noon. On a coast where some lidos pack the sand like a car park, that breathing room is the luxury. Order a cocktail or a plate of fruit to the lounger by scanning the QR code and the afternoon barely requires you to sit up.

Now the caveat we promised. The beach side runs 8:00 to 19:00 by the club’s own FAQ, and in July the sun over the Tyrrhenian does not touch the water until after 20:00. A couple planning the postcard moment from a front row lounger in high summer will be politely stacked away before it happens. The romance here is a two act structure: the last swim as the light goes low, then up to the restaurant terrace for the aperitivo and a 19:30 dinner while the sky performs. In September the sunset drifts earlier and the lounger version becomes possible again.

The kitchen is more ambitious than the beach bar label suggests. Lunch runs 12:00 to 14:45 with seafood and a sushi list that is genuinely unusual for this stretch of Calabria, and the evening belongs to the wood fired oven and its high, soft Neapolitan style dough. Takeaway from the pizzeria is confirmed on the club’s FAQ, which quietly enables the cheapest date on the Coast of the Gods: two boxes, the free sand, the last light.

Where it falls short is disclosure and underfoot. No price for a set, a table or anything else is published anywhere we could find, so budgeting means asking, and visitors note pebbles at the waterline with a bottom that deepens quickly, which suits confident swimmers better than toddlers. One more trap to sidestep: a venue an hour south in Palmi trades under a nearly identical name, and some listing sites blend the two. Check that the address you are navigating to says Via Lungomare, Tropea.

The club’s address is the strand that runs beneath Tropea’s sandstone cliff, the pale sand and glass clear water that put this town on every list of the best beaches in Italy. The practical point for club guests is that the free beach is steps away in either direction, so a morning on your own towel and an afternoon in the lido rows is a legitimate way to run the day.

From the old town the walk is the famous one, down the stairways cut through the cliff to the sand, ten minutes of descent and a stiffer ten back up in the afternoon heat. Tropea’s little station sits close behind the seafront, which makes this one of the few Calabrian lidos you can reach by train, and drivers will find the Via Lungomare parking fills by late morning in August.
