Lido Charly has stood on the Marina del Convento sand below the old town of Tropea for more than thirty years, and the structure itself is the attraction: a finely kept stilt house planted in the shallows, with the bar and a small seafood restaurant raised over water so clear that guests photograph the seabed between courses. It is run by the family that founded it, with the sort of names attached that reviewers remember, Antonio on the floor, Katia keeping the evening lively, Elisia and Nicola taking the bookings by phone.

We rank it first on the Calabria club directory not because it is the biggest operation on this coast but because it holds the one asset no other lido here can copy: a dining terrace that faces the open Tyrrhenian dead west, so the sun goes down behind the Aeolian Islands while you eat. The lido sits shoulder to shoulder with Lido Costa degli Dei on the same stretch, sharing the white sand but keeping its own kitchen and its own following.

The honest read

The table is the point

Plenty of lidos in Calabria rent a fine sunbed. What Lido Charly sells is the hour after you leave it. The terrace holds roughly a dozen tables, raised over the shallows, and diners describe eating lulled by the lapping of the waves while the light drops behind Stromboli. One guest called the sunset unparalleled, another called the whole evening romantic and enchanting, and the pattern across a hundred reviews is the same: people come for a beach day and remember the dinner. For two people, book the last daylight table, order the raw plates, and let the volcano do the work.

The daytime story is quieter but solid. Visitors describe umbrellas set with real space between rows, comfortable beds, hot showers and washrooms so clean that more than one review dwells on them, which on this coast is its own kind of luxury. The water in front is glassy and shallow over white sand, and the old town is close enough that you can walk up for a granita and be back before your umbrella notices.

Where it falls short is consistency and transparency. A recent diner was blunt that some fried items tasted of the freezer while the fresh dishes shone, another felt 19 euros for spaghettoni alle vongole and 9 euros for Tropea onion salad stretched the location premium, and a spring visitor found charming but visibly new staff still learning the service. None of this sinks the place, but order what the sea gave them that morning, and since no bed or entry rate is published anywhere, settle the price on the phone before you commit your day.

The sand it sits on

Marina del Convento, Tropea

The cove takes its name from the convent above it, and it is the calmer, more local end of Tropea’s shoreline, separated from the postcard crowds by the sanctuary rock of Santa Maria dell’Isola. The sand is pale and fine, the water shelves gently, and the cliffs behind throw afternoon shade earlier than the main beach, worth knowing if you are staking out a full day. Our Tropea beach guide covers the whole run of coves, the staircases down from the old town and where the free sand hides in August.

Getting there and booking

The practical part

The lido sits on the Marina del Convento stretch south of the sanctuary, reached on foot from the old town down the staircases or along the shore path. Driving is the usual Tropea puzzle, summer parking near the sand is scarce and paid, so ask the club where to leave the car when you call, and treat the walk down as part of the evening.

Booking runs the old way, by telephone and in person. That works fine for a Tuesday sunbed, less fine for a Saturday sunset table in August, so call days ahead for dinner in peak season. If you would rather we handle it, send your date and party size below and we pass the enquiry to the club to confirm availability and the current rates for your date, at no cost to you.

Good questions

Before you go

Is Lido Charly good for a romantic evening?

It is the strongest sunset table in Tropea. The dining terrace stands on stilts over the water, the dozen or so tables face west, and on a clear evening the silhouette on the horizon is Stromboli itself. Reviewers describe the atmosphere as romantic and enchanting, and an aperitif timed an hour before sunset is the move that costs the least and gives the most.

Can you see the sunset from Lido Charly?

Yes, and it is the reason to come. The terrace looks out over the Tyrrhenian toward the Aeolian Islands, and multiple visitors single out the moment the sun drops behind Stromboli as unparalleled. There is no closing time posted online for the terrace, so confirm dinner hours when you reserve.

How much do sunbeds cost at Lido Charly?

The club publishes no price list, so the rate for a sunbed and umbrella set is to be confirmed directly with the club. For context, posted rates elsewhere on the Tropea coast in 2026 run from about 20 euros in early summer to 70 euros for a front row in August, so call before you assume either extreme.

Do you need to book at Lido Charly?

For dinner in July and August, yes. The stilt terrace holds only around a dozen tables and it is a known sunset spot, so reserve by phone with Elisia on 340 746 6368 or Nicola on 345 926 5327. For a sunbed on a June weekday you have better odds walking in, though a call ahead costs nothing.

What food does Lido Charly serve?

Seafood, from raw plates and a roughly 25 euro seafood appetizer through mussels, octopus on potato cream and the catch of the day. Reviews praise the tuna cut and the first courses, though one recent table suspected frozen fish in the fried items, so ask what came in fresh that morning and order toward it.

When is Lido Charly open?

It is a summer operation. Full beach service runs through the warm months, with June to September the reliable window and spring and autumn quieter, and exact opening and closing dates are to be confirmed with the club. The bar and restaurant run through the day into the evening in season.
