Wizard Beach is the kind of place that makes you work for it, and then rewards you completely. It lies on the wild north shore of Isla Bastimentos, one of the green islands of the Bocas del Toro archipelago on Panama's Caribbean edge, and there is no road to it at all. You take a water taxi across from Bocas Town to the little Afro Caribbean village of Old Bank, then walk a jungle trail over the spine of the island for thirty or forty minutes until the trees open onto a long, palm backed strand of soft golden sand. Alternatively a boat tour drops you offshore. Either way, arriving feels like a small expedition, and the beach at the end of it is close to empty.
The honest read is that Wizard is beautiful and wild rather than gentle and easy, and you should come knowing which you want. This is an open ocean beach, not a sheltered cove, so it catches the surf, and when the northern swell is running the waves are powerful and the currents can be strong. On a calm, settled day the swimming is a joy, warm and clear beneath the palms, but on a big day the sea is for the confident and experienced only. There is no lifeguard, so the judgement is entirely yours, and the sensible move is to read the water carefully and stay within your depth.

Red Frog Beach, a walk away
A further walk along the north shore trail brings you to Red Frog Beach, the more set up of the Bastimentos beaches, with a beach bar and more of a scene when the boats are in. From the Old Bank dock the path leads inland and across the island, and while it is walkable in good conditions it can be muddy after rain, so wear sturdy footwear.
