Calm water beaches in Bocas del Toro

Bocas del Toro is a Caribbean archipelago of two moods, and knowing the difference is the whole game if you want calm water. The beaches that face the open sea, the wild sweeps at Bluff and Wizard, are gorgeous and windswept, but they carry real surf and often strong currents, which makes them thrilling to walk and risky to swim. The gentle water lives on the sheltered side, in the protected bays and channels and on the lee of the outer cays, where the same warm turquoise sea lies flat and shallow enough to wade for a hundred metres. Pick the right shore and Bocas is as calm as it is beautiful.

The calmest of all sits on the north western tip of Isla Colon. Starfish Beach, or Playa Estrella, is a sheltered, shallow crescent so still that cushion sea stars settle in plain sight, and neighbouring Boca del Drago is the same easy water with fewer crowds. Out among the islands, the inner, lee side beaches of the Cayos Zapatillas give you calm clear water over sand and reef, the protected cove end of Red Frog is gentler than its open face, and the shallow, sheltered water around Cayo Coral is a classic calm snorkel and lunch stop. These are the places for children, nervous swimmers and lazy floating.

Bluff Beach and Wizard Beach are the famous, beautiful sweeps, but they face the open Caribbean with surf and often strong currents and rip tides, so they are for walking, surfing and photographs, not for a casual swim with children. The gentle water is on the sheltered side, at Starfish and Boca del Drago and on the lee of the cays, and once you know that, planning a calm day becomes simple.

Go early and go on a settled day. Mornings are usually flatter than afternoons before the sea breeze builds, and the drier, more settled spells bring the clearest, calmest water, while a rainy or blowy patch clouds and roughens even the sheltered spots. The cays are calm but need a boat and, at the Zapatillas, a park landing fee, so factor the trip in. There is no reliable lifeguard anywhere in Bocas, currents can appear even on calm days, and all conditions are typical only and never guaranteed, so swim within your limits and supervise children closely.
