The verdict

  • Who it is for. Travellers chasing the last of the Mediterranean warmth or the first of the winter sun, including half term families wanting reliable conditions.
  • The pick. Crete and Cyprus for the warmest lingering Mediterranean, Dubai for comfortable autumn heat, and Zanzibar for the start of its short rains shoulder.
  • The one thing to know. October is a month of two halves, with the eastern Mediterranean holding warmth early on while the reliable winter sun shifts toward the tropics and the Gulf as the month ends.
The brief

Why these made the list

October is the year's great handover. The Mediterranean is cooling and shortening, but its warmest corners, the eastern islands and Cyprus, hang on to swimmable sea and reliable sun well into the month. At the same time the winter sun map begins to light up, with the Gulf turning comfortable and the tropics moving toward their dry seasons. The trick is knowing which way to look.

We have ranked the destinations that genuinely deliver in October on warm sea and dependable sun, with honest notes on timing. The eastern Mediterranean is the play for the first half of the month, while the Gulf and the Indian Ocean become the safer bets as it ends, and we are clear about where conditions are a gamble rather than a certainty.

How to read October, and where to be careful

October is best understood as two distinct halves. In the first two or three weeks the eastern Mediterranean, above all Crete, Cyprus and Rhodes, holds genuinely swimmable sea and reliable sun, making it the last good window for a classic European beach trip. As the month wears on the days shorten, the evenings cool and some seasonal resorts begin to close, so the earlier you travel the surer the warmth.

From the middle of the month the smart money shifts toward the winter sun map. The Gulf becomes comfortable again as Dubai sheds its summer extremes, Mauritius warms into its spring, and the Maldives edges toward its dry season. These destinations grow more dependable exactly as the Mediterranean fades, so for late October dates they are the safer bet.

A couple of honest caveats apply. Zanzibar can see the onset of its short rains late in October, so travel early there, and the Maldives forecast is steadier than midsummer but not yet at winter certainty. The Caribbean and parts of the wider tropics remain within their hurricane and wet seasons this month, which is why they do not feature here. Treat all conditions as typical rather than guaranteed and follow local advice.

Questions, answered

Common questions

Is the sea still warm enough to swim in October?

In the eastern Mediterranean, yes, especially in the first half of the month, with Crete, Cyprus and Rhodes holding swimmable warmth and reliable sun. The western and northern Mediterranean cools faster. In the tropics and the Gulf, Dubai, Mauritius and the Maldives all offer warm water that grows more dependable as the month goes on.

Where is the warmest beach in Europe in October?

Cyprus and Crete are the warmest reliable bets in Europe this month, with the southern coasts of both holding summer sea temperatures well into October. Rhodes and the rest of the eastern Aegean also stay warm early on. For the surest swimming, travel in the first half of the month and favour south facing coasts.

Is October a good time for half term sun?

Yes, October half term has good options at both ends of the warmth spectrum. For lingering Mediterranean sun, Cyprus and Crete are reliable early in the month, while Dubai offers comfortable winter sun with plenty for families to do. The Indian Ocean islands are also warming into dependable form as the month progresses.

Why is the Caribbean not on this October list?

October falls within the Atlantic hurricane season and the wetter months for much of the Caribbean, so conditions are less dependable than the destinations featured here. The Caribbean dry season and its most reliable beach weather arrive later, from around December onward, which is when it earns a place on these guides.

Is Dubai too hot for the beach in early October?

Early October can still be hot and humid in Dubai as the summer heat lingers, with the sea very warm. By the second half of the month conditions ease into the comfortable warm days that make Dubai such an easy winter sun choice. For the most pleasant beach weather, aim for late October onward.
