Who it is for. City travellers who want sand within reach of the Gothic Quarter, and anyone willing to ride a train an hour north for the clear water and pine framed coves the city beaches cannot match.
The pick. Barceloneta for the easy city swim and the people watching, but the real beauty is up the Costa Brava at coves like Sa Boadella and Calella de Palafrugell, an hour out and worth every minute.
The one thing to know. The city beaches are convenient rather than beautiful, busy and a touch gritty in peak summer, so the honest move is to ride the train to the Maresme or the Costa Brava for the water you are picturing.

Barcelona is one of the few great cities with real sand inside it, a run of wide golden beaches laid out for the 1992 Olympics that put a swim within a metro ride of the medieval streets. They are a genuine pleasure, framed by palm and the glint of the W hotel sail, but they are city beaches first, broad and busy and built for volleyball and chiringuito lunches rather than for clear water. How I ranked them, and how to enjoy them

The honest divide near Barcelona is convenience against clarity. The city beaches, from Barceloneta to Nova Icaria, are a genuine joy for what they are, sand you can reach on the metro after a morning of Gaudi, but the water is harbour calm rather than crystal and the sand is broad and busy in high summer. The further you travel from the port, the clearer the sea and the prettier the setting, until on the Costa Brava you reach the pine and rock coves that are the real prize. Decide whether you want a quick swim or a beautiful one before you choose.

Transport shapes everything here. The city beaches are a walk or a short metro from the centre, while the R1 train hugs the Maresme coast north to wide beaches like those near Mataro, and the R2 south runs to Castelldefels, Garraf and Sitges, a string of beaches you can reach with a cheap ticket and no car. The Costa Brava proper, from Tossa northward, is best with a car or a bus and rewards the longer trip with the clearest water of all, so match your ambition to your morning.

Timing matters more here than the brochures admit. From late June to August the city beaches are at their most crowded and the Costa Brava coves can fill by late morning, so arrive early for the parking and the quiet. June and September are the sweet spot, with warm water, long light and far smaller crowds, while the sea is at its warmest into early autumn. Conditions are typical rather than guaranteed, and the afternoon breeze that delights the kitesurfers at Castelldefels can ruffle the water elsewhere.
