The classic Barcelona beach, a broad sweep of imported gold sand running from the old fishermen's quarter past the marina, alive with volleyball, joggers and the smell of paella from the chiringuitos. It is convenient above all, a few minutes from the Gothic Quarter on foot, and the people watching is half the point. It ranks first among the city beaches for that sheer accessibility and atmosphere, with the honest caveat that it is busy, broad rather than beautiful, and best enjoyed early or out of season.
