The pick of the Sharm el Sheikh beaches, Ras Um Sid sits on a headland where the fringing reef comes close to the shore, so a few strokes from the sand you are over a coral wall thick with fish. It ranks first for putting the Red Sea's best feature within reach of an easy entry. A lighthouse and a row of hotels back it, and a jetty or ladder gets you past the shallow reef table without standing on the coral. Mornings are calmest, and a mask turns a swim into a proper snorkel.
