Los Cabos is the quickest warm beach hop from Los Angeles, around two and a half hours to where the Baja desert meets the sea at the tip of the peninsula. Verdict: the best fast escape for drama and resorts, with the lively swimmable sand of Medano Beach and the famous rock arch offshore, though many of the open Pacific beaches have strong surf and are for sunbathing rather than swimming. Pick a calm bay like Medano or Chileno to swim, and Cabo delivers a desert coast like nowhere else.

Malibu

Let the length of your trip lead the choice. For a day or a long weekend, stay on the quick line. San Diego and Malibu are reachable by car, and Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta are short enough flights that two or three nights on warm sand make sense. For a full week, the longer line opens up, with Hawaii around five to six hours over the Pacific and the Caribbean coast of Mexico delivering the clearest water of all in return for the longest journey here.

Timing matters in two ways. The Pacific options, Hawaii and Mexico's west coast, are warm for most of the year and driest from roughly November to April, while the Caribbean side of Mexico is at its finest through the northern winter and spring.
