Vietri sul Mare is where the Amalfi Coast begins, the first town as you come from Salerno, and it wears two identities at once. It is the ceramics capital of the coast, its shops stacked with hand painted majolica, and it is the easiest beach town to reach, with a wide bay at Marina di Vietri sitting just minutes from the city.
The honest read is a fair trade. Vietri does not have the vertical drama of Positano or the pastel romance of the central villages, and the edge of Salerno is close by. In return you get a broad, usable beach, a genuine working town rather than a resort, the landmark Crestarella tower and the twin rocks offshore, and the simplest transport links on the whole coast.
Use Vietri as an easy first taste of the coast, or as a relaxed base for exploring east and west without the worst of the crowds. Buy ceramics in the town, swim in the wide bay, and when you want more drama head west. For seafood and fishing village character stop at Cetara, for a quiet cove try Erchie, and for the longest sand go to Maiori.
Vietri mixes free public sand with lidos along Marina di Vietri. For sunbed hire and full service, see our Amalfi Coast beach clubs directory.
Marina di Vietri keeps free public stretches alongside the lidos, where you can lay a towel at no charge on a wider bay than most of the coast. It is busiest on summer weekends with day trippers from Salerno, so arrive early.
Lidos along Marina di Vietri hire sunbeds and umbrellas with cafe and bar service in season. Names, opening dates and rates are to be confirmed, so check locally before you travel.
Vietri sul Mare sits at the eastern gateway of the Amalfi Coast, just above Salerno. It has the easiest access of any beach on the coast, with frequent buses and trains to Salerno nearby, and ferries from Salerno along the coast in season.
Because it is so close to the city, Marina di Vietri can be busy with day trippers on summer weekends, so arrive early for space and parking. The ceramics town sits above the beach, an easy detour for shopping before or after your swim.

Partly. Marina di Vietri keeps free public sand alongside paid lidos, so you can choose a towel on free sand or a hired sunbed. The bay is wider than most on the coast, with room for both.
Vietri is the ceramics capital of the Amalfi Coast, famous for hand painted majolica. It pairs that with a wide, easy to reach beach and the closest links to Salerno of any town on the coast.
Yes, especially if you want an easy beach day and ceramics shopping without long transfers. It is less dramatic than the western towns, but the simplest to reach and a genuine working town.
May, June and September bring warm, settled sea and more space on the bay, before and after the July and August peak when day trippers from Salerno fill the beach on weekends.
