Vietri sul Mare is where the Amalfi Coast begins, the first town as you come from Salerno, and it wears two identities at once. It is the ceramics capital of the coast, its shops stacked with hand painted majolica, and it is the easiest beach town to reach, with a wide bay at Marina di Vietri sitting just minutes from the city.
The honest read is a fair trade. Vietri does not have the vertical drama of Positano or the pastel romance of the central villages, and the edge of Salerno is close by. In return you get a broad, usable beach, a genuine working town rather than a resort, the landmark Crestarella tower and the twin rocks offshore, and the simplest transport links on the whole coast.
Use Vietri as an easy first taste of the coast, or as a relaxed base for exploring east and west without the worst of the crowds. Buy ceramics in the town, swim in the wide bay, and when you want more drama head west. For seafood and fishing village character stop at Cetara, for a quiet cove try Erchie, and for the longest sand go to Maiori.
