Mtende is the kind of place people keep almost secret. Tucked near Makunduchi on the wild south coast, it is a tiny cove where tall coral cliffs frame a crescent of soft white sand and water that swings from pale mint to deep turquoise. Baobabs and low bush press right up to the cliff edge, there are no resorts in sight, and the whole scene feels like a reward for the drive that gets you there.
The tide runs the show completely. At high water the cove fills into a clear, sheltered pool with rock outcrops that make the colour pop, ideal for a calm swim and the kind of photographs the south coast is loved for. As the sea drops, a sandbar opens, the beach doubles in size and the swimming fades to wading. Get the timing right and Mtende is magic, get it wrong and you arrive to a pretty but largely waterless bay.
Be honest with yourself about what is not here. There are no sunbeds, no kitchens and at most a simple vendor, so this is a cove for a swim, a wander and a sit rather than a full beach day with services. The path down from the cliff top is short but uneven, and the rocks reward sensible footwear and a careful eye on the tide. None of that detracts from the place, it just sets expectations.
Pair Mtende with nearby Kizimkazi and its dolphins, or the cliffs and caves around Makunduchi, for a rich south coast day. Come at or near high tide, bring water, sun cover and your own shade, and carry everything back out with you. Mtende is a wild, undeveloped cove with no beach clubs on the sand, and we never invent venues, prices or status. For organised daybeds and verified spend bands elsewhere on the island, use the Zanzibar beach clubs directory.
The path down passes a high cliff terrace with one of the best framed views on the south coast, free to enjoy and unforgettable near sunset.
The cove itself is open public sand with no club on it, clearest and widest as the tide turns, perfect for a quiet swim and a few photos.
Mtende sits near Makunduchi on the south coast, roughly 60 to 65 km and about an hour and a half to two hours by road from Stone Town depending on conditions. Most visitors come by taxi or private transfer, then follow a short, uneven path down from the cliff top to the cove.
Bring water, sun cover, your own shade and small cash, since there is little on site. Wear footwear that copes with rock, check the tide chart and aim for higher water, and treat the cliff edge and the cove with care as you would any wild, unpatrolled spot.
Send your details and we will help arrange a beach club or daybed booking on the calmer, busier coasts near Mtende. We confirm current minimum spend and availability with the venue before you commit. Nothing is charged here.
Yes at high tide, when the cove becomes a clear, sheltered pool against the cliffs. At low tide the water drains far out to a sandbar and swimming all but stops, so time your visit to the rising or high tide.

Very few. This is an undeveloped cove with at most a simple vendor and the cliff top spot, so bring water, sun cover and cash, and carry your litter back out with you.
If you want drama and seclusion it is one of the prettiest small coves in Zanzibar, especially at high tide. If you want sunbeds, food and a long beach to stroll, a bigger east coast bay will suit you better.
The dry seasons of June to October and December to February give the clearest water and calm conditions. For the cove at its best, aim for a day when high tide falls in the morning or late afternoon light.
