Gerry’s Bar sits on a deliberately quiet run of Nungwi Beach at the island’s northern tip, past the point where the main strip’s music and touts fade, beside one of the north end’s big international resorts. The pitch has not changed in years: a shaded stretch of kept sand where nobody hassles you, cold drinks and fresh seafood under the palms, and guest musicians who start with the sunset and play into the night. No velvet rope, no wristband, no entrance charge at all.

Nungwi earns its crowds honestly: unlike the east coast lagoons that empty into flats at low water, the sea off this northern point stays deep enough to swim at most states of the tide, which is why the beach works as an all day destination rather than a timetable exercise. Nungwi village is about an hour’s drive north from Stone Town, and the bar sits on the quieter sand beyond the central strip, next to the north end’s big resort compound. On foot, the beach itself is the road: walk north along the waterline until the music of the strip drops away.
