Punta Piedra is the part of the Tulum shore where the beach shows a different face. Its name means rock point, and that is exactly what you find, a low headland where soft sand gives way to flat stone shelves at the waterline. It breaks up the long sweep of the hotel zone and gives this stretch a more textured, characterful look.
For swimming this is a mixed blessing. On calm days the water is clear and gentle and a careful dip is lovely, but the stone underfoot means you cannot just stride in anywhere, and bare feet quickly find the rough patches. A pair of water shoes turns the rocky sections from a nuisance into a non issue.
Around the point the sand returns in soft pockets, and this is where most people settle. The stretch sits in the middle of the hotel zone, so clubs, food and restrooms are close by, though as ever a comfortable lounger here usually comes with a minimum spend rather than free shade on the open sand.
Come to Punta Piedra for a bit of character and calm, clear water, and pack water shoes. If you want long uninterrupted soft sand, Playa Paraiso nearby is wider and gentler underfoot, while Playa Pescadores gives you the central beach scene. Punta Piedra mixes public sand and club frontage, and we never invent venues, prices or status. For the clubs we have verified along the Tulum shore, with minimum spend bands where published, use the Tulum beach clubs directory.
Pockets of free public sand sit on either side of the rocky point, with no loungers or shade, so bring your own water and sun cover.
Clubs hold parts of this stretch and offer loungers, food and restrooms for a minimum spend. We confirm each venue and its terms before listing it.
Punta Piedra sits in the middle of the Tulum hotel zone road, an easy taxi or bike ride from Tulum town. The beach road is narrow with tight parking, so cycling in or sharing a taxi and walking the last stretch is often the simplest approach.
Pack water shoes for the rocky sections, plus water, sun cover and cash for a club minimum if you want a lounger. Watch your footing on the stone shelves and judge the water yourself, since lifeguard cover here is limited.

Send your details and we will help arrange a beach club or daybed booking near Punta Piedra and along the Tulum coast. We confirm current minimum spend and availability with the venue before you commit. Nothing is charged here.

They help a lot. The rocky sections at the waterline can be rough on bare feet, so water shoes make wading in and out easy. The soft sand pockets around the point are fine without them.
On calm days, yes, the water is clear and gentle. The stone underfoot means you should pick a sandy entry and take care. Lifeguard cover is limited, so judge the conditions yourself.
It is a mix. Some public sand is free, while clubs hold parts of the frontage and ask for a minimum spend in return for loungers, food and shade. Bring cash if you want the comfort of a club.
Calm mornings in the drier months from November to April bring the clearest, gentlest water, the coolest sand and the smallest crowds before the afternoon wind and any seaweed build up.
