Tel Aviv is an easy coast for a family beach day if you choose the right strip. The Mediterranean here is warm through the long season, the city beaches are municipal and well kept, and a run of offshore breakwaters calms the water on several of them, which is exactly what helps with children. The catch is that none of these beaches has a fully enclosed shallow lagoon, so the difference between an easy day and a tiring one comes down to picking the sheltered sand and the right hour.

Below we rank the family beaches on the calm of the water, the shade and facilities, the cost and the ease of a day with children. We are honest about which are free and which charge for extras, which sit behind a breakwater and which are open sea, and we never promise safety, because conditions are always typical rather than guaranteed. Keep children close in the water and follow the lifeguard flags wherever they fly.

The ranking

Ranked for families

Scored on calm water, shade and facilities, cost and the ease of a day with children.

1
Northern city

Metzitzim Beach

The gentlest family beach in the city, sitting behind a breakwater that holds back the swell so the shallow water stays calm on a typical day. Soft sand, a relaxed restaurant, a playground close by and a friendly, bohemian feel make it the easy first choice for the youngest.

Far north

Tel Baruch Beach

A wide, sheltered northern beach behind a breakwater, with calmer shallow water, soft sand and plenty of parking, which suits families travelling with a car and a lot of kit. Quieter than the central beaches, with showers, kiosks and room to spread out.

Gordon Beach

The easiest central day, soft golden sand a short walk from the hotels, with seasonal lifeguards, showers, sunbeds and kiosks, plus the marina and a seawater pool close by. Breakwaters calm parts of the water, though it stays lively and the sea is open.

Frishman Beach

A busy, fully organised central beach beside Gordon, with lifeguards, sunbeds, showers and kiosks right on the promenade. Breakwater calmed pockets help with children, and the flat seafront walk makes arriving with a pushchair and a cool bag simple.

Far north, below the cliff

Hatzuk Beach

The quiet, cleaner choice away from the crowds, with soft sand, lifeguards and a free public stretch beside a paid managed section with sunbeds and a restaurant. The sea is open here, so it suits an older, calmer day rather than the very youngest.

Jerusalem Beach

A central, accessible beach opposite the city, with lifeguards, showers, sunbeds and an easy promenade right behind it. Convenient and well served for a straightforward swim, though it is open sea and one of the busier stretches in high season.

The honest read

Which beach for which family

A few honest pointers. For the calmest, shallowest water for small children, the breakwater sheltered beaches win clearly, so start with Metzitzim for its gentle water and playground, and fall back on Tel Baruch in the far north when you want the same shelter with easy parking and more room. For a central day a short walk from the hotels, Gordon and Frishman are the convenient choice, with soft sand and lifeguards, as long as you accept the lively crowd and the open sea between the breakwaters.

Plan around the summer above all. From June to September the sun is strong and the sand offers little shade, so aim for the morning or the late afternoon, bring your own umbrella, and lean on the restaurants and the Gordon seawater pool for a cool break. Avoid the dense August weekends if you can, when the central beaches and their parking fill fast, and keep the youngest at the sheltered northern beaches where the water is kindest. Sunbed, pool and parking prices are set locally and are to be confirmed.

Good questions

Before you go

Which is the best beach for families in Tel Aviv?

For the calmest, shallowest water Metzitzim leads, sitting behind a breakwater so the sea stays gentle for the youngest, with a relaxed restaurant and a playground close by. Tel Baruch in the far north is a close second for the same sheltered reason, while Gordon is the easiest central choice, soft sand and lifeguards a short walk from the hotels. Match the beach to the age of your children and the calm you need.

Which Tel Aviv beach has the calmest water for young children?

The breakwater sheltered beaches are the gentlest. Metzitzim and Tel Baruch both sit behind offshore breakwaters that hold back the swell, so the shallow water stays calmer than the open central beaches on a typical day. Gordon and Frishman have breakwater calmed pockets too. There is no fully enclosed lagoon anywhere, so keep little ones close and read the lifeguard flags before a swim.

Are Tel Aviv family beaches free?

Most of the municipal beaches are free and public, including Metzitzim, Tel Baruch, Gordon, Frishman and Jerusalem, with seasonal lifeguards, showers and toilets. You pay only for extras like sunbeds, umbrellas or parking, and at Hatzuk there is a separate managed section with an entry fee alongside the free public stretch. Any sunbed or parking prices are set locally and are to be confirmed.

Do Tel Aviv beaches have lifeguards and facilities for families?

Yes. The main city beaches are municipal, with seasonal lifeguard towers, showers, toilets, changing areas and sunbed rentals, and kiosks or restaurants along the promenade. Lifeguard hours run through the swimming season and are set locally, so they are to be confirmed for your dates. Always read the flags, as conditions are typical rather than guaranteed and we make no promise about swimming safety.

Where can families find shade on Tel Aviv beaches?

Natural shade is limited on the open city sand, so bring your own umbrella or hire one of the sunbed and umbrella sets along the central beaches. The promenade cafes and the restaurants at Metzitzim and Gordon give a cool break, and the seawater pool beside the Gordon marina is a calm paid alternative on a hot or choppy day. Plan around the cooler morning and late afternoon hours in high summer.
