A tiny, striking cove between Bondi and Bronte that looks like a postcard and swims like a washing machine, beautiful for sunbathing and people watching, but among the most dangerous surf in the east.

The verdict

Best for. Sunbathers, photographers and walkers on the coastal path who want a dramatic cove and a quick dip when patrolled.

Best spot. The sand itself for the view and the scene, with the Bondi to Coogee walk passing along the clifftop above.

Know this. Tamarama has powerful surf and strong rips and is not a safe general swimming beach, so only swim between the flags.

The honest read

Tamarama is the most photogenic beach in the eastern suburbs and the one you should be most careful in. It is a tiny cove pinched between two steep headlands, with a small park behind and a cafe at the back, and the way the cliffs frame the sand makes it feel like a private, glamorous pocket of coast.

That glamour earned its nickname, Glamarama, for the see and be seen crowd that sunbathes here. It is a wonderful place to lie on the sand, watch the surf and the people, and pause on the Bondi to Coogee walk, which runs along the clifftop just above the beach.

The water is the catch, and it is a serious one. The same narrow cove that looks so beautiful funnels powerful surf and strong rips, and Tamarama is widely regarded as one of the most dangerous swimming beaches in Sydney. The lifeguards often close it to swimming entirely when conditions are bad.

So the honest read is simple. Come for the scenery, the sunbathing and the walk, but treat the swimming with real respect. Only enter the water when it is patrolled, swim between the flags, and if the flags are not up, do not swim. Confident surfers know the cove, casual swimmers should not test it.

Who should swim elsewhere. Families and gentle swimmers are far better at Bronte next door, with its pool and bogey hole, or at the calmer southern corner of Bondi. For drama, photos and a glamorous hour on the sand, Tamarama is unmatched.

Tamarama, eastern beaches

Tamarama sits in Sydney's eastern suburbs between Bondi and Bronte, reached by bus from Bondi Junction or on foot along the coastal walk.

Parking is very limited around the small cove, so public transport or arriving on foot from Bondi or Bronte is the easy option.

Facilities are good for the size, with a cafe, showers and a small park. Treat the surf with respect, only swim when patrolled and stay between the flags.

Common questions about Tamarama Beach

Is Tamarama Beach safe for swimming?

No, not for general swimming. Tamarama has powerful surf and strong rips and is one of the most dangerous beaches in Sydney. The lifeguards often close it. Only swim when it is patrolled and always stay between the flags.

Why is Tamarama called Glamarama?

The nickname comes from the glamorous, see and be seen crowd that sunbathes on the tiny, scenic cove. It is a fashionable spot for lying on the sand and people watching rather than a safe family swimming beach.

Is Tamarama good for families?

Not for swimming. The surf is too powerful and the cove often closes to swimmers. Families are far better next door at Bronte, which has an ocean pool and a calm natural rock pool, or at the sheltered southern corner of Bondi.

Where is Tamarama Beach?

In Sydney's eastern suburbs, tucked between Bondi to the north and Bronte to the south. The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk runs along the clifftop above the beach, so many visitors pass through on the path.

When is the best time to visit Tamarama?

Autumn, from March to May, brings warm sea and settled days. The tiny cove fills fast on warm weekends, so arrive early for a spot on the sand, and always check whether swimming is patrolled before you go in.
